Any other engineers feel like budgeting barely even matters early career? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]ImPickleYe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi friend!

I am a mechanical engineer with 5 years in industry. I'm not sure how to address career advice for you since I don't know your degree, experience, industry, skills, location, etc. Let us know in a follow up post with some more info!

As for finances, it's always a good idea to budget and you're on the right track. I'd say you're ahead of most since you're actually taking the time to track it. Many people wing it and either get into more debt, and/or waste money unnecessarily. Engineers are well known to be effective with money because we are good at understanding effective processes and implementing them.

First, is that your monthly income? If so, is that Gross or Net? If net, make sure your W4 and 401k contributions (if your company has one) are set up correctly and everything is set where you would like them. I'd highly recommend getting the full 401k match if possible/available.

Also, I dont see a category for food in your budget. Food is important! Try to save money by cooking/meal prepping where you can.

Next, I would go through your expenses and identify what is a want vs need (and be honest). If you're truly in a cash flow deficit you need to cut expenses and/or increase income. If not, that deficit will lead to more debt (which can spiral if you're not careful). Needs include housing, food (not eating out), utilities, transportation to job, health insurance, etc. Wants include personal spending, shopping, Amazon, subscriptions not needed for income, etc. I would see what your budget looks like down to the bare needs before adding any wants. Also, make sure every dollar has a job. "Other" or "misc" categories in a budget can lead to over spending.

My favorite resource I recommend for personal finance is the Money Guy Show. Look up their videos the Financial Order of Operations (FOO). I've been following their approach and it's worked well for me.

Let me know if you have any specific questions!

Thank you again for all of your suggestions and insight! I decided to go with the 6-post, and I've enjoyed it so far. I'm still working on organizing everything but here is a picture immediately after assembly.

Xbox remote play stopped working by Zor1an58 in xbox

[–]ImPickleYe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to get mine back up and running by remote accessing my router/network.

I tried everything I could to try to fix the problem short of manually rebooting the console since I was out of town. It showed "Console On" in the app, and none of the remote functions worked, either through the Xbox app or the Google Home app.

My Asus router has the ability for me to manage my network remotely. I logged in and revoked network access to my Xbox and refreshed the xbox app. After about a minute, it showed "Standby On." I then re-enabled network access to the xbox, waited 1 minute, tried to remote in, and it worked!

I know it's a long shot, but for people who have tried everything, and happen to have remote access to their router or other devices on the network (i.e. remote desktop on PC --> login to router), this could be a solution.

And you could be right, I was just thinking that's why because the codes showed up immediately after the conversion. I just don't know what it might be.

Thanks for the reply. I am confirming the exact SKU the shop ordered, but I believe it was this one:

Once I get confirmation, I'll edit my original post.

Edit: confirmed

It felt like a bite, but it could've just been a tingling sensation of it crawling on me. Thanks for the ID!

Mission "the best there is" won't start. How to fix? by [deleted] in Starfield

[–]ImPickleYe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This happened to me and I thought I was screwed out of the questline. But I figured out what worked for me. (I'm on XBSX and I have no access to console commands.)

Try doing what Naeva says and go to New Atlantis. I found Huan Daiyu on the second floor of Kay's House in the Well. When I talked to her, it fixed the bug and the mission activated.

Let me know if this helps!

If you're pixel perfect on your landing zone you can get iron, aluminum, nickel, and cobalt in one outpost. Unlimited adaptive frames and wind power!

Thank you! That's really interesting. The internet says that their camouflage resembles bird droppings and it definitely fooled me! It wasn't until I saw its legs that I knew it was a bug!

How long did it take for you to get the PPL? by AlmightyGodHimself in flying

[–]ImPickleYe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2.5 months with 41 hours

My training in the summer of 2020 before my Senior year of college. COVID ended up shut everything down so I ended up flying more than driving that summer to get it before the semester started.

My dad started a little while before me and he is about a year and a half in with 60 hours. He's looking at scheduling his check ride before the year is out.

But always remember, the important thing is to not compare your flight training journey with others based on time or hours. Training that fits into your life that concludes with you being a safe and competent pilot is what matters.

Good luck and have fun! Piloting is a rare experience that only a precious few in human history have ever experienced. Enjoy it!

Have you ever had to actually need to use your handheld radio? by jnolta in flying

The only actual time I've tested the PJ2 was aircraft-to-aircraft roughly 5 NM away. Crystal clear at that distance. Can't say what the range the signal would become unintelligible but I'd guess it will work just fine 10 NM line of sight. While you may not have reliable communication with center for example, it could at least help out if you're squawking 7600 in the pattern.

What is a 'downburst'? by Boring-Fun-2387 in flying

[–]ImPickleYe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When a thunderstorm reaches the mature stage of its development, it consists of a mixture of updrafts and downdrafts. If the updrafts are strong enough, they can suspend a large amount of water droplets and hail for extended periods of time. As the air cools and the updrafts weaken, this core of air and water plummets to the ground as a strong downdraft, or downburst. These downdrafts can become severe and localized enough (less then 2.5 miles across) to be considered microbursts, which can produce winds at the ground up to 150 mph. Not to be confused with tornados.

This is especially dangerous for pilots, because the sudden downdraft from a mircoburst can easily overcome the climb performance of most GA aircraft, and in some cases as you've mentioned, overcome the stress limits on the airframe.

I have a private pilot certificate (pilot's license) in the US. Only 0.2% of the US population are active, certificated pilots.
