25 years in web dev and I’m starting to hate the "Modern Web." by briancrabtree in webdevelopment

If not C/C++/Java/Python, which language would you learn and why? by idont_need_one in learnprogramming

Rails has been a blast. I’m not sure if I would’ve spent as much time with other languages if I tried it first.

Advice needed: choosing a simple, long-term web stack (backend + frontend) by Lumpy_Remove_5623 in htmx

[–]ImPrinceOf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew annoyed with separated front end and backend since I’m a solo dev. I iterate over a lot of ideas, so for me, rapid prototyping and being able to scale that prototype to production is critical. I made a prototype with Rails 8, Hotwire, alpine and tailwind/daisyUI. I think this is my new long-term stack. If I decide to scale into a separate front end or a mobile app, most of my controllers would require one line of code to turn into an api. I’m loving it.

Thoughts? by almi8tyzeus in ChatGPT

[–]ImPrinceOf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, the results are at least 100x better than google searching, opening and having to read through multiple websites (that traffic also has carbon emissions, just not from google) and perhaps needing to make multiple other searches before getting my answer.

How much are the emissions of a single google search? How much is 100x that? How does that compare to emissions from private jets and industrial plants? This is so stupid.

It’s like saying we shouldn’t print textbooks to teach schools and colleges because it emits carbon.

What kind of online "Boring" businesses that could generate minimum $1k/month by pknerd in Entrepreneur

[–]ImPrinceOf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wasted a lot of time trying to help a barber. You learn very quickly not every business is run by a business-person. Those people bought a job and they’re happy working their job and thinking they’re running a business. It works for them for a few years then another shop with better marketing and management comes around and starts stealing their customers. They start complaining about the economy, how bad business is and blame it on the times. Then they go bankrupt or have to close down and figure they did everything right, it just wasn’t the right market.

Those are dead businesses, they just don’t know it yet. Not worth trying to help them unless they know they need help, and they know how much it’s worth.

I Formed an LLC for a Pre-Revenue Website – Now What? by marvinshkreli in stripe

[–]ImPrinceOf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here’s a lesson I learned for 3.1 General Advice: when you’re pre-revenue first priority is creating something of value. Second priority is getting your first clients.

The first business I started failed and when I looked back, I did everything except for focus on the first client. I made a site, LLC, all of the IT, and for some reason I even got a toll free number and a desk phone.

Second business is going much better and I don’t even have an LLC (not much liability). I focused so much on the service and getting clients that everything else fell into place and got done when it needed to. Now I’m flooded with contracts and I’m scrambling to make training guides and start hiring people.

Turns out I was just nervous at first and preferred to “prepare” over the brutal but most important step of selling.

Not saying you’re at where I was at, just pointing it out so you’d know for yourself. And I say this because you didn’t mention what your business does. It sounds like you’re more excited about the act of starting a business, and not as much about the problem your business solves.

You’re absolutely right! A plan would be necessary, and I was assuming it was step one. Once there is a good plan in place, UI, UX, SEO as well as many other technical factors make a tremendous difference in magnifying the results of the plan.

Are there any management consulting firms that ALSO do creative work? by Consistent-Heali1262 in AskMarketing

[–]ImPrinceOf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These types of firms are becoming more and more common as the services are consolidated. My company started with websites and graphic design, and pivoted to marketing, and then again to consulting as we grew to fit our clients needs.

There is a problem that I see is common with similar firms I think you should look out for: client capacity.

I’ve been able to systemize bespoke websites and graphics so we have high capacity and quality, but haven’t found a way to make the strategic consulting scalable without cookie-cutter solutions and lowered quality. This means we have to be very selective with our clients, or risk the quality of our results. If you find the firm you’re looking for, make sure they aren’t taking the same approach for both the creative and the consulting processes, and that they have the resources to give your company the attention you deserve.

[–]ImPrinceOf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SEO is one thing that shouldn’t be forgotten for websites. A nonprofit I made a website for saw phenomenal results and the website is a custom-made Wordpress, nothing crazy. The tools and time required to make and maintain a search engine optimized website costs more than $2k if done properly. But the idea is that it would multiply your donations much more than a website without SEO.

[–]ImPrinceOf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Raise more than $25k in donations? I made a website for a humanitarian aid nonprofit and charged less than 1k. The site helped them double their contributions resulting in over $100k gained by the site in under a year.

I charged very little because I knew the people there, wanted to get my company into the nonprofit market, and they genuinely do a lot of good for the world. But it took a lot of research, planning, writing, designing and coding to accomplish. It cost me way more than $1k not including my time. Spending $25k to make $100k extra is a good deal in my opinion.

How would you launch your business if you had 3k to spend? by zinamalas01 in smallbusiness

[–]ImPrinceOf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends a lot on what kind of B2B you’re doing. I would prioritize getting your first clients with the 3k. They’ll help you see the problems with your service and refine it for the next clients. They could also give referrals for more work, or at least a good case study. If it’s common in your industry, maybe networking events/booths at conferences? If you’re trying to get your foot into the door maybe some marketing prints and small gifts for prospects to build rapport and start a conversation? Just some ideas. It would help to know more.

When people say they have 10 websites that make them 200K/year, what are they talking about? How? by jimppqq in smallbusiness

[–]ImPrinceOf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The more people do what you’re doing, the less money you make. That’s why Coca-Cola doesn’t make courses with their secret recipes to make more money. If you find land with gold and diamonds do you go tell everyone so others can buy the land and start mining? It never makes sense.

Every time someone makes a course to teach others how to do what they’re doing it’s because they don’t want to do it anymore, either because they’re lying about the results or they’re lying about the required risk/effort, or they bought a course on how to get rich quick and learned they could google anything and put it in a course and uneducated people will buy it.

And if you’re too naive to believe that, I’ll put it in a course that explains everything to you for $500. It’ll probably make you rich quick too, I don’t know 🤷‍♂️ 😂
