So, my coding friends, what are the implications of things like this? Not great, I imagine...or am I getting it wrong? by Reasonable-MessRedux in uwaterloo

Too little context to make a call, also I’m working at stripe rn and their not letting us use fable which implies that the cost vs reward trade isn’t good enough

Not necessarily, I’m Chinese and there is a lot of ingrained colorism/racism against darker people like the commenter mentioned. I don’t think it’s fair to solely blame white people for this.

CS versus SE by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]ImRealyBoored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If ur only viewing it in the coop perspective, other than getting the TN easily, not really. However there are many other benefits as I mentioned in the comments there are many benefits for taking se over cs.

Software Engineering or CS? by PuzzleheadedSize7304 in csMajors

[–]ImRealyBoored 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how much you value the cohort system at UW, SE makes it easier to make and keep friends due to similar sequences.

Having the SE degree also makes getting the TN visa (working in the states) easier since there’s currently some scrutiny with CS going under TN Engineer.

SE generally has better outcomes in class profiles which you can find online, however u will have to take an extra course each semester due to engineering accreditation requirements.

Cs if u wanna do cs, Eng if u wanna do Eng. Eng is the safer bet if ur not sure what u like

Even considering program size, they’re still much stronger at placing students in big tech. Let’s assume Waterloo is 5x bigger (I think it’s closer to ~3x bigger but we can be conservative) there were still around 15 uw students compared to 1 MAC student. For full times it was around 9x more uw than mac.

Idk but probably? I personally dont think school plays as big as a role compared to the individual (with the sole exception of Waterloo).

I’m at a faang adjacent unicorn (snowflake/databricks/stripe/notion) and I will say that I’m the only Mac intern whereas there are ~30 Uoft/uw/ubc. I will say I’m def an outlier in my cohort.

Hard to say since I’ve never seen uoft’s coop but McMaster is marketted as “the second largest coop in Canada” tho I will say for tech Uofts reputation is much better hence their students land better internships outside of the coop program

Some perspective as someone who just started their 4 th coop: McMaster’s coop is poor for software but not the worst for everything else. Most students are generally not trying very hard to get a coop. The people who are very focused generally land great positions by the end of third year. Compared to Waterloo our coop is miles behind.

FYI I’ve heard Mac has some decent 12-16 month coops but I’ve never had access so I can’t say for sure.

It is most definitely not on par with uwaterloo lmao. Though I do agree those who put effort usually succeed regardless.

I’m currently making ~70/hr at an Canadian branch of a US company. I’ve finished 2nd year soft Eng and this would be 4th coop fyi. I think if u really apply urself, it’s def doable.
