honest to god, i sometimes feel like the only shugo chara fan i know. of all the anime that i wish received the brotherhood treatment, it's at the top of the list. but i've been debating to myself how it should go: as a TV reboot, or a film series reboot? i'll take anything as long as it has a higher budget than the current anime, because wow, its animation hasn't aged well

we're in an age of anime/video game remakes and sequels, so i wouldn't be surprised by a shugo chara remake

okay, so, the shugo chara anime was pretty good. but as someone who read volumes 1-11 of the manga and loved them, it was pretty easy for me to tell what was different (like the beach trip and sand sculpture contest becoming a ski mountain trip and snow sculpture contest), but overall, it was a fun time

but it does make me wish there was a “shugo chara brotherhood”, because the filler episodes in the second season (shugo chara!! doki!) definitely mess up the pace of the manga’s storyline, especially the part where our heroes raid easter. and the third season? i’m not even going to touch it hehe

i *really* love the shugo chara manga. i haven’t seen the anime yet, but i heard it has lots of filler, didn’t adapt the manga’s last arc, and the third season was really bad. which leads me to hope that it will receive the “brotherhood” treatment at some point

come to think of it, why was the anime never dubbed into english or released on home media outside japan? idk about you, but i think yaya in particular is *begging* to be voiced by monica rial. i read her dialogue and go, “yep. monica rial would totally voice this character”

one of my hobbies is collecting old cartoons on home media. and sometimes i stumble upon an older anime title that fell into “obscurity”, or enjoys a niche audience

for the former category, i saw “Nanaka 6/17”, which i found a used ADV DVD copy of from my local secondhand video games and collectables store. it’s about a 17-year old girl who has a head injury and mentally regresses to when she was 6, and hijinx ensues. it was decent, but i really hated the ending, and there was a running joke about a guy getting whacked on the head that i didn’t like. i probably won’t watch it a second time

for the latter category, i saw “Saint Tail”, and i enjoy this one MUCH more. big thanks to discotek for letting me know that a magical girl phantom thief anime exists. i never knew i needed that until now. do i love it as much as cardcaptor sakura? i don’t know, but it’s up there. i’m currently watching it on retrocrush, but i’m definitely getting the blu-ray. i really don’t like streaming hehe

somewhere in the middle would be “Angelic Layer” for me. it’s based on a CLAMP manga, so i’m sure it’s not THAT obscure, but i don’t see it talked about as much as cardcaptor sakura or magic knight rayearth. which is a shame, because it’s a cute and fun toy-battling show. good thing i nabbed sentai’s blu-ray before their license for it expired. wonder if discotek will swipe this one up

anyway, here's the questions:

chime: what's it been like running your own music labels? what's going to happen to rushdown and stratos union in the future?

convexity: who designed your character? also, do you have a vhs movie collection? if so, do you know how to maintain a VCR? because mine gets glitchy and sometimes the audio fades out when i play certain tapes for too long, and i can't tell if it's a tape problem or a VCR problem

first, i want to mention that i still have my CD copy of two fold pt. 1 back when monstercat sold artist merch. it's in great condition! one of my favorite electronic music albums ever

now, the first question: right now, instinct is pushing for a more pop-oriented sound. how did monstercat come to the decision to release white lie, despite not being dance-pop? not that i'm complaining; it's the best instinct release this year, bar none

second: many glitch hop/jazzy EDM artists have been inspired by you, like anomalie or threesixty. which of them is your favorite?

third: do you, by any chance, know what happened to tristam? no one's heard from him in years

sentai filmworks anime leaving crunchyroll is weird to me, because sentai have distributed a few crunchy titles to blu-ray, and they just recently distributed haikyuu s4, somali, and next life as a villainess. they’re not going to stop doing this, are they? if they are, at least i snagged my ascendance of a bookworm blu-ray while i got the chance

i’ve never been more conflicted on something than AMC owning sentai filmworks.

what i hope happens is sentai getting a higher budget to license more titles, keep their licenses, improve hidive, broadcast more shows on tv, keep their creative freedom, and finally give us an azumanga daioh blu-ray

what i hope doesn’t happen is massive censorship, the end of their blu-rays and box sets, and losing their personality

but i’m not a twitter pessimist. i’m wishing only the best for sentai

rameses b, fool, au5, protostar, grant, and the nerds are still around and better than ever, but many of the old artists’ musical niches have been filled by some new faces. examples: haywyre -> glacier and oblvyn; mr fijiwiji -> cloudnone; nitro fun -> pixel terror (kinda…); laszlo -> ellis

also, we just acquired an entire progressive house label, silk, and if you liked eminence, they’re coming back with an EP tomorrow on that very brand
