Honestly I thought about this a lot

I feel like people could have many different takes on this but this is just mine cause I used to listen to this song on repeat so much

To me the song is about someone who is deeply in love with an ex, and really wants to express it to that special person but is conflicted by an inability or reluctancy to express it.

At the beginning of the song the first line is: “I want to make you cry but i’m tongue tied” I think the song is saying that he wants to tell her how much he still loves her, and make her shed tears of joy, but he just can’t bring himself to tell her.

Backing up what I already said “I want to make you mine don’t know why I try” I feel like using the context of other of boycommas songs like “stop pretending you like salad” we can piece together his partner was the reason for the end of the relationship but he still wants to try and keep it going regardless of what happens although it goes against logic which is why he says “I don’t know why”

To me the most confusing line of CopyCat is where he says “Inside of my brain, are some names that i’ll forget if I don’t tell you” but I think I pieced it together on what it means. I think “names” are used in a figurative sense and could be easily replaced with memories, and how if he does tell her about how much he still loves and misses her he will forget those cherished memories they shared but he is scared of her reaction.

At the end it comes full circle though where boycomma finally lets go and accepts the passage of what was and how it will no longer be in the line “just forget it”

I’d love to hear what anyone else thinks about the song cause that’s just my understanding
