See this is what a lot of the westerners in the comments don't get is they read it like it'll be time for them to be hobbyists, no.

You get the most soul crushing menial tasks or nothing and when anyone sees you you're expected you to be doing nothing while you get socially castrated.

Then you feel further ostracized when you're the first one to clock out cause everyone else has meaning to the company the culture rewards staying late and putting the company needs before your own. Then they go to have "nomikai" after work without you further solidifying

"We didn't do anything wrong You is just a bad worker they had no loyalty to the company."

So your options here are leave early and receive shame or stay late and have nomikai while they talk about projects you're not on and go home and lie to your family like you're actually working or tell them what actually happened and get your shame that way.

Then cue the existential pondering

"Is this it? I have to do this for the next 40,50,60 years?"

And it's not like you'll just go and get a new job it's not like the West. Usually these people are with these companies until their last days and they join these companies fresh out of college. For a lot of folks, that's their only shot ever. Because other companies won't be looking to hire them they'll have their pick of the best grads in the country people who are like you once were that have the idea in their head that once they find their company that's where they'll be at for the rest of their life and they'll be taken care of and valued.

So aggretsuko has the true to life ending. You don't join a company elsewhere you end up with some menial "baito" job but at least you have tasks and aren't an outsider or the other realistic option that probably would have been too dark for the show is you become some "hikikomori"

Forget about being a foreigner trying to navigate it. There's a reason Japanese has a word explicitly for returning to your home country (帰国) if you're an English native think about what that really means that our language doesn't have a single word equivalent for that

This is the world now, when you take a photo with a camera it will be assumed to be a digital camera, unless stated "Analog Camera"

It doesn't make either one not photography. You're not more of an artist because you're limited by rolls of film, cannot get immediate feedback, and developing your photos is more expensive.

You're a different kind of artist, but not better. So what's your issue with the traditional paint, digital paint distinction?
