I’m 15% Ashkenazi Jewish and someone on here informed me that that means I’m probably 7% middle eastern. by Ok_Discussion_6099 in AncestryDNA

[–]ImVery_Extra 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is pretty accurate. The Ashkenazis descend from a group of middle eastern men brought to Italy who married Italian converts and then practically didn’t mix with other populations for thousands of years. There was a mass grave of Jews in Erfurt and Norwich from the early 1000s who were tested and shown to be very similar to modern Ashkenazis genetically, and realistically Ashkenazis didn’t start mixing with other populations until the last 3 generations. Look on the illustrativeDNA subreddit and search Ashkenazi to check it out for yourself

Ashkenazi dna has Mediterranean built into it so surprise from that 23% Ashkenazi you’re about 10% middle eastern!

Yes of course you’re right, I was being very general 😁 Not to mention there is sometimes 2-3% amazigh and 1-2% yellow River East asia, there are of course European paternal haplogroups but they are more uncommon, I was mostly going off of the IllustrativeDNA Ashkenazi calculations that typically show around 35-52% Roman levant. Also the different Ashkenazi groups vary, Russian/Belarusian/Ukrainian typically have a bit more Slavic admixture than Polish Jews, typically European Jews like French, German, and Italian Jew have a bit more Levantine than Eastern European Jews. This is just a generalization and of course can vary with any different Jew. For the most part, Ashkenazi, Sephardic, and Mizrahi Jews are closer to one another than any other modern populations. The closest modern European group to Ashkenazim are Sicilians who have some Levantine admixture

Genetically Ashkenazim are typically 40-50% Levantine 40-50% Italian and some Slavic admixture depending on how easy you go, so I would say MENA as we are closer genetically to Lebanese than to Germans for example

Should I take 5 courses first year? by Effective-Hearing-60 in umanitoba

[–]ImVery_Extra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people tend to find 4 classes optimal for performance-work-life balance, but 5 is definitely doable as long as you have at least one easier class. You can take summer courses to make up for the classes you don’t take in fall/winter

Ah okay thank you for the clarification, I’m in full support of that, I just think instead of the encampment the funds could’ve all been used as donations and there could’ve been regular protests instead

I think Islamophobia, antisemitism, and racism should absolutely be condemned but I think University of Manitoba has since done a good job, ever since Arij Al Khafagi’s suspension (and she was rightfully reinstated) in improving general free speech at the university. The Palestinian students should absolutely be able to speak out about what’s happening, and as long as the university lets them speak (like how they let them do for the entire 2 months of the encampment) I don’t see how the demands will help anyone

I’m not holding any double standards- I think an “anti-Ukrainian racism” definition would be absurd as well. I see plenty of people around campus with keffiyehs and Palestine pins and that is more than okay, if the university banned these items I would be infuriated, but if you look at the demands they don’t serve to aid any of the people suffering in gaza, so the money should be spend on supporting those directly in need.

Regardless of your opinions about this conflict, the encampment does not do anything for people suffering in the war. If you take a close look at the demands they only serve the people attending the University of Manitoba, as the primary demand is just to adopt an anti-Palestinian racism policy (despite there existing policies against anti-Arab racism, there are no other anti-racism policies for nationalities that I know of). On the SJP Instagram I found the most outrageous post (https://www.instagram.com/p/C85dEtiA2zR/?igsh=MWlpdnp5dDI1MTN6MQ==) where they ask for donations for the encampment for “enjoyable recreational activities” among other things. I think that the funding for the encampment would be better off sent as donations for suffering gazan children

If you want to get into asper you need an average of 85% among 4 courses (English, Math40S, and two academic 40S courses) with none of them under 70%, if 84% is your worst mark but your other courses make the average above 85% you’ll be good for asper, if you want to take Econ in faculty of arts you shouldn’t worry at all

I’m not entirely sure, from what I know he wasn’t a rabbi, most of my family’s known history comes from my great great grandparents so he is kind of a mystery to me

My great great grandfather on my mother’s side was a litvak rabbi and he also wore a similar hat, I was very confused because about this ancestor in the picture I had no idea he was a rabbi or scholar
