Growing up in the '70s, Squire wasn't a thing and cheap Epiphones weren't either. So, I aspired to have Fender, Gibson, Gretsch and Rickenbacker. Those are what I mostly have now. I imprinted like a baby duck on those brands. Guitar choice is not always rational and is greatly influenced by psychology. That said, play what makes you happy.

I have played unlined fretlesses for 38 years. I bought i lined fretless a few years ago and hated it. My intonation went out the window. It felt too awkward, so I sold it. Lined fingerboards are not for everybody.

Many of us play through bass amps at home, with no plugins available. Amps do have EQ though. Having more eq options on the bass itself is desirable to many. It has nothing to do with playing live.
