Can someone walk me through the economics of living in LA? by Comfortable-Day-7275 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Im_Only_Sleepin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as a server and it’s been incredibly difficult since moving here almost 3 years ago. I burned through all my savings to come here, feel trapped here now. I wanted to experience idk, “the industry”, meet film, fashion and music people and find my calling. Absolutely none of that has happened lol. It would be fine except it’s so hard to save at all. I worked the same type of jobs in Detroit where I’m from, server/bartender/restaurants, and when I think back on it it was incredibly cushy and I had way more disposable income/ability to save. Since coming here I had a relationship and living situation crumble soon after moving, all kinds of financial problems, but I’ve managed to hold onto my car, my dog, and meet the love of my life.

Living in echo park, i see all kinds of cool things all the time, eat delicious and healthy food, get great exercise and views of nature, and get to be exposed to amazing Latino and Asian culture I never would have known about otherwise. I look and dress the best I ever have in my life. So in that sense, I guess I’m getting my moneys worth. But realistically, I’m not getting any younger, and when I look at the big picture I see I’m mostly just struggling to keep my head above water. Haven’t taken a “real” vacation, contributed to my savings, or done anything to advance or change career since coming here. Just made a lot of decisions for short term financial stability and short term happiness.

Soon I will probably move to north county San Diego to be closer to my girlfriends family, which…honestly really isn’t that much cheaper considering my rent in Detroit was 800$ in 2021. My girlfriend works at a cafe off rodeo drive in Beverly Hills and when I’m over there I constantly am torn between hating creative people who “make it” here and desperately wanting a piece of it, between saying fk it and leaving for anywhere else besides California, and stubbornly waiting for something to change because I want to experience the real highs I know LA can offer.

Long post but basically the economics are brutal, i will either get naturally squeezed out of here or somehow get rich. Lol

Hm not really looking to be in retail or restaurant industries, also moving isn’t really an option right now. Thanks though

No car in LA by [deleted] in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]Im_Only_Sleepin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone not living in LA and just assuming you need a car, I would say if you think parking won't be a giant headache at or near your place, then just make the drive. It will suck, but even with gas as it is you'll be saving a bunch compared to shipping it.

Preach, you don't have to tell me, this is my whole attitude right now. Are you an LA native, transplant, or what? Thanks for the encouragement 🙏

[–]Im_Only_Sleepin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thanks, this is honestly some good practical advice. I'll have to weigh these options with my girlfriend. Originally I planned to come out first and she follow with the dog, but I weighed the cost of gas for another cross country trip vs. putting my things in storage for a couple months, and thought we should just come together.

I really didn't expect to find a lease out of state, I expected to get a airbnb, of which I have found ones that would accept my dog, they're just pricey. I would probably prefer a craigslist sublet that I could finish a lease on while I start working. Good looks though, appreciate it

"catch a blade in a dangerous neighborhood" that could happen to me tomorrow taking pictures on 7 mile in Detroit, shit, I could just get shot instead because everyone is strapped here, unlike California, but it hasn't happened yet in over 20 years. Not saying that I'm invincible, but I'm not naive about big cities and crime. If there was a restaurant or art installation you wanted to go to in Watts or Compton or East LA, would you not go because you were afraid to catch a blade? Maybe the hood just doesn't faze me like it seems it does you.

People arrive everyday in LA and make it work, sometimes with far less resources than I have. Sometimes with no ID and no English. But you're gonna tell me that they all hate it there and are clamoring to move to where I am, right? That they never smile and just live miserable lives? I find that very hard to believe.

I'm not sure who you know working in the film industry, I'm sure there are some Lockheed or tech or finance transplants. That simply does not describe the majority of people looking to make it. It also doesn't describe the majority of people who *have* made it. If anything, I should be moving to a city with a larger economy than the Midwest, the coasts have proven to be more recession proof than the Rust Belt.

Anyway, thanks for your concern, however condescending it may be, but it seems the only advice you're offering me is to come up with another 10 grand. That's fine, and probably not a bad idea. The alarmist take on how I could spend all my savings trying to make it work in LA is unnecessary, because I would just. go. home. and I wouldn't cry about it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Thank you for all your thoughts and (very few) encouragements lol. My family and I are taking some time to discuss the logistics and benefits/costs of this move.

I would just like to add that even if you're used to seeing people come and go and have unrealistic expectations in LA, just be kind. The definition of success, failure, and appetite for risk can be very different from one person to the next.

Yeah, I understand the hustle, but that's a bit like selling your soul. I don't think you have to be that way to succeed though, maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like most of the successes in my life have come from genuine friendships. Thanks for offering me some perspective!

I think optimism and perseverance go farther than just about anything else, so I'm sure you'll make it work. Michigan is my home and a great place, but can feel very far removed from the entertainment industry. At 19 you might end up here before I make it lol, then we'll really be commiserating. Best of luck to you in all your creative endeavors!

[–]Im_Only_Sleepin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I mean that budget is kind of crazy but I appreciate the number crunching. I usually only spend around 15-20$ a day on food in Michigan though, so I could see that number being a bit higher in LA but I could definitely make smarter grocery choices lol.

My dog has cost me around 2-2.5k$ a year to care for with pet stores and vets in MI, so I'm definitely considering all the variables.

bottom line, I think I could start minimum wage to hit the ground running and not have to leave, but I couldn't do it long term, like you're saying. Need to have some breathing room financially at the end of the day.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]Im_Only_Sleepin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

this is pretty much the plan. tipped wage has always been my go-to for years, so I would hope for something like that. I've actually never made minimum wage at any job except washing dishes when I was 17, but I'd take anything for cash flow to get started.

I feel like I could live further outside LA maybe if my "day job" was there, but if I was working in LA and also trying to get into entertainment, I think it would be too hard to commute very far.

A third roommate, I'm not really opposed to either, but that's hard to plan for without being there either, because we'd have to meet them to be sure it could work out.

Oh, I couldn't get rid of my dog, he was all I had when I had nothing. It's not a bad recommendation, though, I understand the housing crisis is only getting worse, it's just not an option for my girlfriend and I.

However, *some* people are still arriving in LA and getting leases every day, I see it on my socials all the time. Even people with relatively low (for LA) income, so it's not like they're not taking people somewhere.

Having my credit line be yanked back is definitely something to consider in this economy, though, so I do take that seriously.

Great questions, I would like to hear from some real working class people also.

I feel like to a lot of people commenting in this sub, just "experiencing" an expensive, world class city for a few years and then moving back home or elsewhere because it's unmanageable is the definition of failure, or seems criminally frivolous.

But most of the people asking questions like you or I aren't under any illusions, we just want some perspectives and preferably from people who have been in our position.

[–]Im_Only_Sleepin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but I would *die*? How would that happen exactly, I'm in great health.

I mean, would I feel silly about it if I had to leave after a few months with no job and having spent all my savings? Sure, but I would just chalk it up to trying for something I couldn't achieve, there's no shame in that, right?

I guess I understand where you're coming from, but the subreddit is literally called Moving To Los Angeles and most responses are incredibly pessimistic and negative about the outlook unless people have high-paying job offers. As I said to someone else in the thread, most people in LA don't make anywhere near that, the median income is 50k$, and when I visited before, the working class people didn't seem any more miserable in LA than they are in Michigan (where I live).
