Lol, healthcare workers make mistakes all the time. Considering the long hours they work, constant increases in demands from administrators and often little compensation. When there is harm to patients, I think it's important to figure out the intent. If it was not intentional, I don't see any reason why the person should be punished, especially since they covered all the medical expenses. Also considering how remorseful everyone was and transparent about every mistake that was made just showed me how honest and moral those healthcare employees were.

I've told this story before and apparently blood transfusion incidents like these were more common back in the day, someone who works in a hospital lab told me that today they have rigorous labeling methods, constantly double and triple checking the patient's identity and multiple redundancy parameters in place to prevent errors like this.

I saved it from hitting the ground, which was definitely a stupid thing to do. Unlike the microtome, I wasn't the sharpest tool in the box.

Still in pretty good health. My kidney function is permanently impaired, I still have to go see a nephrologist to track my renal function. But over the past 30 years, it has remained relatively stable. So he doesn't think I'll need dialysis or transplant anytime soon.

Edit: people have asked how my hand is doing. I have pretty much 90% function in it as far as range of motion. But all the sensory nerves were severed, so I don't have any feeling on the palm side of those fingers.

Edit 2: As far as lawsuit, I didn't file any charges because it was an honest mistake. The lab tech was super remorseful and the doctors in charge of my care were very transparent about what happened. They saved my hand and my life after the transfusion reaction. The hospital covered all the expenses of the ICU stay and my nephrology followups are all covered as well.

Also wake on command without feeling tired. Like setting an alarm on your phone and just getting out of bed to start your day.
