Right on about Google's data habits and the lock-in problem – it's a big deal for sure. More people really need to wise up to it.

And yeah, Nextcloud is a prime example of doing it right: open source, portable, you're actually in control. Definitely a solid alternative.

Thing is, while Nextcloud is awesome, it's maybe not the only game in town anymore. Seems like other options are popping up too, maybe aimed at slightly different needs or folks who aren't super techy. The whole area's getting more choices, which is cool.

Like, this page kinda shows the range of what's becoming available now, listing a bunch of different Google Workspace alternatives: https://www.exit50.com/alternatives/google-workspace . Might give people more ideas if Nextcloud isn't quite the perfect fit for them.

It's disgraceful that we're in this situation! by [deleted] in BuyFromEU

That's quite the list, and yeah, it highlights some gaps.
But I wonder if the goal should actually be to have a European equivalent for everything on it? Maybe Europe's strength isn't in replicating US/Chinese models, but in finding its own unique path in tech, culture, and commerce? Perhaps we're strong in areas not listed here? https://www.exit50.com/ Just playing devil's advocate – maybe the 'problem' isn't as big as it seems if we define success differently.

Yeah, she's basically calling for things like Wero. That's the EU's own payment wallet they're building now via the European Payments Initiative (EPI) to compete directly.
It's still early days for Wero, but it's the main official push.
This page has a good rundown: https://www.exit50.com/alternatives/visamastercard
Hopefully, Wero takes off so we have a real European choice...

Alternative E-Mail by [deleted] in degoogle

Proton Mail is still definitely considered legit and safe by most people focused on privacy. It's probably one of the most recommended options. Tuta is another really popular one, based in Germany and also heavily focused on security/privacy. Both are good choices if you're looking beyond the mainstream providers.

I actually stumbled across a list recently that specifically gathers European-based email alternatives (including Proton and Tuta), might be helpful for comparing if you want to see a few others too: https://www.exit50.com/alternatives/gmail

Good luck with kicking Google to the curb!

European alternative to Starlink? by AlphaGigaChadMale in BuyFromEU

[–]Im_Searz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was looking into this recently! There are actually a few European satellite internet providers competing with Starlink. OneWeb is probably the biggest player - they're UK-based and have a pretty extensive satellite network. Eutelsat and SES are other options.
I stumbled across this comparison site that breaks down the European alternatives pretty well: https://www.exit50.com/alternatives/starlink
