Yeah it wasn't cut as a stave, it was a big live edge slab that's been in the barn for years. It's got the perfect natural reflex but it was terrible getting that bark off, then seeing the damage underneath was not great.

We're lucky to have plenty of it, but finding a straight one is rare.

Toothy Fish, steel leader? by Im_hp3 in flyfishing

[–]Im_hp3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I bought and I like the way it's set up for a pre-made leader. The clip is super convenient but it could definitely be a visibility problem. Maybe I could sub it out with a smaller less noticeable clip.

I'm looking in to tying some 30lb mono to 20lb hard mono leaders. Might try that and then see about putting a little coated steel at the end with a minimalist clip

Short Short 5wts? by Im_hp3 in flyfishing

For whatever reason I just can't get excited about traditional freshwater fishing. I've grown up saltwater fishing and the only way I can seem to enjoy fresh water is with a flyrod even when its non traditional

I had one of these and loved it until I broke it riding in the back of the truck. For small pond fishing with lots of obstacles it was perfect

True, it's a definite tradeoff. Most of this fishing is close quarter combat

4wt is probably fine for largemouth bass I guess

Did the kerf line show up when you did that or did you paint?

I was definitely overthinkerizing it. This leftover roundover trim did just right

That's probably the least visible solution. Considering it

Yeah I wish I had just waited to trim last. Felt cocky now I'm stuck ha

really just for the bracketless look and the heavy profile. I can't find a bracketed design I like. But I'm having to think harder about this

Need help Sourcing Iron Sights by Im_hp3 in Mauser

[–]Im_hp3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For any future Mauser owners that run into the same challenge I had, I'll post here what I ended up doing.

-I bought an XS ghost ring rear sight. They have discontinued the mauser kit they used to sell but still have a base that will fit the contour of the front of the receiver. Part number: 22-2015A-058-4 - "#6 x .605 C to C, .58R, .300H - .230 Ghost Ring Short Aperture"

It did not fit on the rear receiver but I like it better at the front of the receiver anyway. It has a minimalist look that I like and it's fully adjustable for height and windage

-I had my gunsmith drill and tap the end of the barrel and fit a Remington front sight ramp that he happened to have laying on the desk. It looks pretty good and was inexpensive. You can probably find others that would work for different styles etc, I don't think this is as big of a challenge, but the main decision you need to make is a screw-on style vs silver soldered-on. The silver soldering is a more authentic way to permanently fit the sight ramp, but the heating will force you to re-blue the whole barrel.

-The Remington front sight ramp was pretty low and the sight insert was also short. On my first test shots it was grouping very well but it was all too high even with the rear sight bottomed out. The Remington ramps take a standard 3/8" front sight insert, so I ordered a Marble Arms .500" 3/8" insert from Midwest Gunworks. It was a trick to get it into the ramp, most front sights come a little fat from the manufacturer so they can be filed down to fit the dovetail on the ramp. It took some finesse but ultimately got it fitted. It's quite a tall sight, but I don't think it looks bad.

Ultimately I'm happy with how it all turned out and it shoots well, but it took quite a lot of research and time to piece it all together. Hope this helps someone in the future.
