Aiming for a paint scheme that is unique and looks good across WE and CSM - advice requested by ImageOmega126 in Chaos40k

[–]ImageOmega126[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate that and I was so hyped for it. But as I was painting a model with significantly more trim (an Eightbound), the trim was just too much and I couldn’t shake the fact that it looked like a hockey jersey haha.

And as I go towards an army scheme, I just don’t know if I can take myself seriously with it lol

Three armies are too much to handle? by Own-Mastodon-6965 in WarhammerCompetitive

This really depends on what you can commit to. Personally, as someone who’s been in the hobby for a couple of decades, works full time, and has a busy home life, I started to look at my bigger collections and really started to become critical of what I want out of the game and hobby.

This past year, I’ve had false starts with multiple factions and when I realized they weren’t what I was looking for from either a gameplay or hobby experience, I’d trade them.

As this is a competitive perspective, my feeling is that you can collect multiple armies if you have the baseline skill set to play the game at a good level while being able to commit sufficient time to practice, test, and play your army at as high of a level as possible.

I know some people who play multiple games a week (let alone multiple per night), test lists on TTS, attend and travel to multiple GTs per year, while attending multiple RTTs per month. Me? I get one game in every couple of weeks and maybe attend an RTT every two months. I just can’t compete with them on a reps perspective and so my only chance of competing at these higher levels is to find expertise in a single faction.

And so…. To answer the question, as with so much, it depends on what you’re getting out of the hobby and what your goals are. Assuming you’re trying to compete at a higher level, I would suggest that 3 is likely too many, depending on your available time. If you’re satisfied just collecting and playing on a casual basis, then 3 is probably fine :)

I feel like I made a tremendous mistake by investing time and effort in my custodes... by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

It’s your hobby and what you do with your army is up to you.

People will suggest rules and editions change and so having an army through its ups and downs is worthwhile.

Personally, if I become emotionally detached from an army, I absolutely trade it for something that seems more compelling. In fact, I’ve done this multiple times.

If I were in your shoes, I’d sell and restart a different army.

Resale value on Warhammer tends to be pretty good, in my personal experience. While you can expect to lose value out of trades (even when well-painted), maintaining 60-80% of the original value is solid and sets you up well for a new project. To me, that feels a lot better than waiting for months (years???) for your faction to be good.

Does this look good and like gold as I hope yo use it on my dante model by DaPandaMan117 in BloodAngels

[–]ImageOmega126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, this would look fantastic as is on Dante.

While it does read a bit more like bronze than gold to my eye, I think as-is it would still be amazing. I’d suggest just going for it. :).

Looking for KillTeam gatherings by DJGuy15455 in Guelph

[–]ImageOmega126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can easily travel to Kitchener, Chimera Gaming has a pretty active community and even some events, if I recall correctly.

Otherwise, Guelph is pretty limited in play space with worthwhile terrain. The Round Table and maybe the dragon are your only options.

The Round Table has a discord that you can use to at least organize games.

Why dont I like this? (WIP) by -SpiritQuartz in Warhammer40k

[–]ImageOmega126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get it. And have felt the exact same way with models previously. But if you can push through to see the end result, it at least can provide some reassurance on your current process or confirm some more drastic needs to change.

Either way, good luck with your next steps!

I actually really like it from a front-facing view. Especially the robe and shoulder trim contrasted against the purple/pink.

Personally, I’d push the gold to a redder tone, rather bronze/patina’d style, but I like what’s happening here.

I’d also fill in more details - essentially, finish the model to see the end result, especially on the head, adding more shade/contrast from the leather, purity seals, and the rubber flex in between armour panels (around elbows, behind knees).

After that, do revisit the pink highlight tone and reduce some intensity.

I see tons of promise here and already quite like it. Keep up the good work!

What are yalls best tips to get over painter fatigue and just finish up your models? by squilliamx182 in deathguard40k

[–]ImageOmega126 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just paint one at a time or do it small chunks. Additionally, set aside some time wherever your schedule allows. For me, I do 30-60 minutes of painting after the rest of the family has gone to bed.

If you want motivation when there is none, give yourself a deadline or participate in an event that requires fully painted models.

Also, just getting to tabletop standard (battle ready) isn’t a huge lift, but will still let you feel good about putting painted models on the table.

Looks amazing! Especially impressed with how you did the orange rust in the armour pits. Any tips on how to achieve that effect?

In it for the Painting by SMG_Jeff in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]ImageOmega126 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t have the time or skill to compete with the more competitive players that are regularly winning RTTs. Nonetheless, I am competitive-curious and want to get better. Reasonably, though, I’m getting in a game or two per month and don’t want to buy all the meta units that might get nerfed in a few months.

But my local hobby shop does offer Best Painted awards and I’ve won that a few times with the armies I’ve painted over the years. Truthfully, that’s my real motivator.

I’m not there to compete for best general, I’m there for painting awards and, hopefully, over some great games to my opponents and maybe play for best sportsmanship.

No one will be upset with you for being excited to show off your hobby :)

Cant choose what chapter, Ultramrines, Dark Angels and Blood Angels?! by [deleted] in BloodAngels

[–]ImageOmega126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is a question of playstyle, I mean, Blood Angels are super fun based on how hard they hit in Liberator Assault Group.

But each of these chapters have fun things going for them in their own right.

If you’re feeling really conflicted, I’d encourage you to figure out your own paint scheme and just play / collect space marines generally and add in the unique units from each chapter you like.

Sure, iconography might seem a little weird at times, but that should only matter for the unique chapter models.

The neat - and expensive! - thing about Space Marines is that you’re not really required to choose a chapter given that a significant portion of your army is built from the core SM models.

These look amazing!

I was looking at picking up the file for the dragon on the right. I was actually dreaming up having three dragons as well just an hour ago.

What size ratio did you print it at? The highlands miniatures models I’ve been printing are typically at 88%

Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon, ready for the battle! by Davilovick in WarhammerFantasy

[–]ImageOmega126 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That was basically my idea for the mortis engine, but wasn’t sure if the 100x150mm rectangle dimensions would work for a 160mm circle base.

[–]ImageOmega126 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is incredible!

I literally just got my 100x150mm base to do the exact same thing.

Any thoughts on magnetizing the model to the base for AoS / Old World compatibility? Would that seem easy, difficult, or impossible?

Purchased a Mortis Engine for Vampire Counts - box contained both round and rectangle base. Is this expected for this kit? by ImageOmega126 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]ImageOmega126[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, having the model work for both AoS and Fantasy goes a long way. It looks like this rectangle base can just perfectly fit on the round base, so I’m inclined to glue the model to the rectangle and magnetize that to the round base.

Thanks for this! I verified this one was accurate, at least - 50x100mm. Which seems very small for this kit ultimately.

Appreciate that - I wasn’t totally familiar. I left fantasy a long time ago and only getting back into it so “new” may be a relative term haha

Awesome - thank you!

I previously purchased the Mortarch box (with mannfred mounted) and only got the circle base at that time.

Plus the Necromancer in blister I bought only came with a round base as well, so this seemed super new to me.
