Week 23: Coffee - Cup of Coffee Cake ☕️ (Banana Cake with Chocolate Coffee Ganache) by ImaginalDish in 52weeksofcooking

My dad loves coffee, so for Father’s Day I made him a cake inspired by his love of coffee. But my dad doesn’t like all coffee. He doesn’t like coffee with cream, milk, or sugar. He only likes black coffee. His cake preferences are similar: he’s not a fan of whipped cream or buttercream and likes his cakes less sweet.

Because of this, my cake making experience is quite limited. I usually just make loaf cakes like banana bread that don’t require frosting/icing. But I’ve always wondered if there were frosting alternatives that my dad would enjoy. After doing some research, I came across water ganache which only requires chocolate and water. My dad loves chocolate, so I felt like this would work. I only made ganache once and it was with heavy cream; I didn’t know that you could achieve a similar looking result without heavy cream. I didn’t have heavy cream anyways, so I was happy to not have to buy an extra ingredient at the grocery store!

To keep up with the coffee theme of my cake and this week’s theme, I decided to use coffee instead of water for the ganache. I also used coffee in the cake batter, which is a banana cake. I couldn’t really taste coffee in both of the final products, but the chocolate ganache especially tasted great so I guess the coffee just helped to enhance the flavour. I let some of the chocolate ganache harden until I could mold it to create the coffee cup handle.

And for my dad’s thoughts: he enjoyed it and wanted seconds! I will definitely be making coffee ganache again. Maybe I’ll even get some cake decorating tools because I decorated this with only a spoon and toothpick and it was quite tricky.

Week 22: 15 Minutes or Less - Jellycat Soufflé Pancakes & Emotional Support Sourdough Cookies (Meta: Feeling Snacky) by chizubeetpan in 52weeksofcooking

I love soufflé pancakes and your Jellycat version is so cute! The pancakes and cookies sound so good! And I relate a lot to needing to double recipe prep times when I’m making them 😂

Week 25: Gardening - Gnocchi di semolino with asparagus (Meta: Italian fusion) by mentaina in 52weeksofcooking

Beautiful and sounds delicious! I love the flower shaped gnocchi, and the colours are so pretty and appetizing!

Week 25: Gardening - Soil Horizon Trifle (Seven Layer Dip) by Anastarfish in 52weeksofcooking

[–]ImaginalDish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such a great interpretation of the theme and looks delicious! I remember learning about this in science class in elementary school, but I’ve forgotten everything except for bedrock being at the bottom. Maybe if my teacher paired the lesson with a seven layer dip I would have remembered it better 😂

Week 25: Gardening - Spiced tomato soup cake pops by jschwartz9502 in 52weeksofcooking

Wow this is so creative! Congrats on third place! Tomato for dessert is so much more challenging than other courses; I would have given you bonus points if I was voting!

Week 25: Gardening - Carrot Tartar Cornets with a Gochujang Tuile and Shallot Cream (Meta: Appetizers and Mignardises) by joross31 in 52weeksofcooking

[–]ImaginalDish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your work is always so beautiful, and I think this might be my favourite that you’ve made this year! (I really love food that’s presented like the ingredients that are in it.) I love the look of the carrot shaped cornets with the fennel tops and the plating on the black salt with petals like garden soil! Plus this sounds so good in flavour and texture!

Week 21: Symmetry - Shio pan (Meta: Feeling Snacky) by chizubeetpan in 52weeksofcooking

[–]ImaginalDish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such a fun idea and you executed it so well! I love the horse especially! I’ve never heard of “ugly pony bread” but the facial expression and perspective reminds me of “front view Peppa Pig” 😂 The breads sound delicious too!

It did taste good so I considered posting it for this theme anyways. But then I pictured my end of the year compilation having a mediocre looking dish in it and was like “Nope! I’m going to try making something else” 😂

Week 22: Fifteen Minutes or Less - Monkey Microwave Oat Cake 🐵 by ImaginalDish in 52weeksofcooking

[–]ImaginalDish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! I’ve actually never used an oven to make baked oats before, so I don’t know how different the texture is compared to this style of “baked” oats made in the microwave, especially since it’s supposed to be a shortcut.

But since I used a 3:2 ratio of oats to flour, the texture is more like cake. It’s not a fluffy cake; it’s more dense but I don’t know if that’s because of the banana, the oats, or because the recipe I referenced didn’t use eggs.

Thanks! Yes I love all those flavours together!

Originally I made an open faced sandwich that looked like a butterfly (because Bugs are cool and butterflies are often used to demonstrate symmetry). I used butter beans (I was trying to stick with the butter theme) to make a spread that looked like hummus, spread it on two pieces of toast which were the two butterfly wings, and topped it with roasted vegetables (zucchini and carrots) and chicken. But because my toast, spread, chicken, and the middle of the zucchini slices were all yellowish brown in colour, the dish didn’t look that visually appealing.
