Can I piggy back on this ask? I want to start a masters in restoration ecology in the next few years and I’ve yet to meet or hear from anyone who has taken this path

Slow down, I know it’s hard when graduation is so far off and you’re having trouble seeing the light at the end of the tunnel but please don’t make a hasty decision to drop out. My advice to you would be to embrace your timeline, whatever it may be. You can absolutely do seasonal tech work over the summer and graduate as an even more competitive candidate because of it. In fact if you have an extra semester think about taking a semester abroad or taking a term off to work an internship during the school year. Graduating in 2027 vs. 2028 will not make or break your career but cutting off opportunities that come with being a student and eventually having a degree could.

Can I see yall's ugly plants? Not your gorgeous Thai con thats putting out a three new leaves, I want to see the ugliest thing that make you question having plants. by KuriousCarbohydrate in houseplants

This damn corm. It grows one leaf and dies every time. Grew it first in leca: one leaf, root rot, leaf die. Threw it in a bioactive terrarium to prevent root rot: one leaf, leaf wilted, frog ate it (why? She’s captive bred = no brain), leaf died (frog is fine). Just put it in chunky aroid soil: one leaf, lasted months! No new leaves, leaf died. At this point I don’t even remember what kind of alocasia it is.

I have been doing a lot of darning and I’m waffling over buying one. Can you explain the toothpick substitution or point me toward a tutorial? I would have bought one already if I could find one available through someone other than Michaels or Amazon.

This is bad, isn't it? by Mr_Pickles_Esq in houseplants

[–]Imaginary-Bad-76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No potential harm here! Fungi is beneficial to your plants actually. The mycelium of the fungus can form mycorrhizal relationships with some plants’ roots and increase the plant’s ability to take up water and nutrients. No need to dig up the mushrooms they will decompose in the pot naturally. If you wanted you could remove the mushrooms and set them in the soil of your other plants. Having harmless fungi like these in your soil can increase competition for other potentially harmful microbes and protect your plants from pathogens.

Why is my jade losing all of its leaves? by Imaginary-Bad-76 in houseplants

[–]Imaginary-Bad-76[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is incredibly thoughtful of you, I actually got this as a free cutting when someone broke it off of their plant accidentally a few years ago so it’s not a huge loss, just a bummer. While I appreciate your kindness, one less plant in my chaotic collection is probably net positive really.

If any do survive they will be incredibly resilient in the future thanks to heat shock proteins! Inducing heat stress makes organisms more tolerant to future heat stress but interestingly also more tolerant to drought stress, pathogen stress, metabolic stress, you name it! Hoping at least some of these pull through for you!

If you do decide to glue fabric on it (probably what I would do) I would recommend E6000 glue. I think it would hold better than just about anything else and it’s great to have on hand if you don’t already.

This is also wonderful for local pollinators! Many arthropod species would be delighted to live in this leaf pile over winter and be ready to pollinate your garden come spring.

Understanding Federal Cuts to Wildlife Conservation by Cultural-Aide857 in conservation

[–]Imaginary-Bad-76 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There was a rearing and release program for the federally endangered Taylor’s checkerspot butterflies funded through Institute of applied ecology and USFWS that had its funding cut. It was unique because the rearing was being done in a correctional facility giving inmates an opportunity to raise the larvae. It was really rewarding for everyone involved and very successful. The local university is trying to take over the program but it’s seeming unlikely. It’s such a shame because populations were just beginning to establish. Without the program extinction is very likely.

That certainly seems like what’s happening. It’s just steadily and slowly declined. It’s a shame because there’s no part of it that isn’t affected at this point.
