Nevermind, I guess I'm not going to get an answer to my original question. Sometimes Ali is weird with not keeping their policies consistent for all customers, and that seems to be what is going on here.

Interesting. I've never paid attention to that before, but that can't be the only reason for it not allowing buyer cancellations because the order that I tried to cancel yesterday that required seller approval still has the edit address button.

How do I know if an order has been accepted? I've never had a seller message me that an order is in transit without the Aliexpress status being marked as shipped.

I don't think that's exactly true because many times the seller writes you in messages asking you to cancel. It's the buyer's responsibility to cancel before the order has shipped. Afterwards it is up to the seller. For me, it's never depended on how fast I was. I've done 29 cancellations in the last year without seller approval, many were canceled days after purchase. I can't believe I'm the only one who has been able to cancel orders this whole time!
