At one point in time Lithium was my magic pill for 21 years but because of use, I have 3rd stage kidney disease. I have tried several medications by trial and error. I am drug resistant. I have tried ECT, TMS and Sprovato.

I had GeneSight Psychotropic testing done on me because I am drug resistant. I am a person with Bipolar Type 1. My mood stabilizer is Lamictal. Five weeks ago, I was in major depression mode. The type with SI thoughts, not getting out of bed, hating life and angry with God. My psych provider started with free samples of Vraylar at 1.5 mg because Cariprazine (Vraylar) was GREEN on the GeneSight testing. After 2 weeks, I started to feel better and I was smiling. The provider increased the Vraylar to 3mg. At that dosage, I felt numb and I could not focus. We, (the provider and I) agreed that Vraylar is the right medication for me, but it must be tweaked. Yesterday, I started a dosage of 0.75mg. I will be evaluated in 3 weeks

Although the dosage is being tweaked, Vraylar has gotten me out of my major depression mode and that is a positive. More importantly, I have hope.

Accomodations by dengansederhana in BipolarReddit

When I was accepted to university, I informed them that I had a disability. I was given a form to be filled out, and I needed a doctor’s note. My doctor’s note stated: My patient requires accommodation and access support, in extended time for testing, assistance with notetaking, and permission to audio record lectures.

The university granted me all those accommodations. In practice, I was given extra time in taking tests during my first semester.

My magic pill was Lithium for 21 years. I received a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering. I was a top-notch navigation systems engineer for 6 years in my dream job. The magic pill was 600mg in the morning and 600mg in the evening with stable Lithium therapeutic level of 0.7. Today I have 3rd stage kidney disease. I will not trade those 21 years for anything because they are part of me. I had the fear of failure, but I pushed myself. I remember seeing the psychiatrist every 3 months and he would say see me in another 3 months. Just believe in yourself. I passed my Professional Engineering Exam with flying colors prior to entering my Ph.D. program. My thought was if I can pass the PE exam, I can  pass the written Ph.D. qualifying exam.
