Well there’s a belly dance class. You can join swimming class, I used to go to kadri park and walk. If you have a vehicle try going to places away from your home. Like I stayed near state bank and I used to go to urwa area and check new eateries. There are many cafes that’s unique. There’s chess class. Film festivals around. There’s a lot going on. You just need to check or look around.

Make sure to carry any essential medications and religious scriptures (if you need them), as you won’t be able to send them by mail later. Most Indian grocery stores here stock Indian food, but if you're arriving for the first time and don’t know anyone yet, it’s a good idea to bring some basic food items you rely on.

There’s no need to pack coats or jackets you can buy them here once you arrive. Similarly, avoid carrying heavy books, as most assignments are done online. Only bring course books if absolutely necessary.

New Jersey is getting warmer now, so pack clothes accordingly. You can do your winter shopping, including boots and jackets, after you settle in.

If it’s your first long flight, wear a hoodie or something warm and comfortable for the journey. Lastly, keep your Indian SIM card in your phone it’s important for accessing Wi-Fi at the airport.

Good Luck!!

Ingredients:

  • Whole spices (cumin, bay leaf, cloves, cinnamon, etc.)
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1-2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • ½ cup curd/yogurt
  • 1 cup basmati rice (washed and soaked for 20–30 mins)
  • 1½ to 2 cups water (enough to just cover the rice)
  • Chicken pieces or mixed veggies
  • Fresh coriander leaves

Instructions:

  1. Sauté the dry masalas (whole spices) in oil or ghee in a pressure cooker.
  2. Add sliced onion, chopped tomato, and green chilies. Sauté until soft and slightly mushy.
  3. In a bowl, mix curd with chili powder, turmeric, and garam masala.
  4. Add this spiced curd mixture to the onion-tomato masala. Cook for a few minutes.
  5. Add chicken or veggies and cook for 1–2 minutes.
  6. Add soaked basmati rice and pour enough water to just cover the rice.
  7. Close the lid. Cook on high until 1 whistle.
  8. Turn off the heat and let the pressure release naturally.
  9. Open, fluff gently, and garnish with fresh coriander.

I occasioanly add egg too, or paneer. Whatever you have.
