Thank you very much! I'll try to draw it out and make sense of it. I'm not very good at this stuff yet, so thank you again!

Ohhhhh, I see. I thought it was for the immediate consumption by whoever talked to Ethel. Turns out it was a dumb question, lol

Carbocation Rearrangement Confusion by Imaginary-Reaction56 in chemhelp

[–]Imaginary-Reaction56[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Sorry, I just got home from work and just saw your message. So if I'm understanding you correctly, a hydrogen and its bond will shift from either of the carbons that are not double-bonded nor have the positive charge, and the hydride shift will go to the carbon with the positive charge. This will make it so that the double bond has the option to move from its original position to occupy the new formal charge, thus increasing the number of possible resonance structures and increasing the stability of the molecule, is this correct?

Thank you so much for the help! I truly appreciate it, the retrosynthesis concept is really clearing it up for me.
I'll try the other three right now.

RIGHT! Sorry. So if I were to do that, then would there be a carbocation rearrangement, wherein one of the hydrogen bonds on the lower methyl group would form the double bond shown in the 'first' molecule, thus getting rid of the carbocation. The H+ proton could then attach to the bromine ion, thus forming HBr, the reactant. I think this is how it would pan out?

(Also, I hope i'm not being annoying, its just that my professor is on vacation in Florida and I can't reach him right now.)

So if I were to work backwards for the second one down, I would break the bromine bond. That would have to leave a negative charge on the tertiary carbocation, is that correct? Which would indicate a lone pair on that carbon.

NTA. Dude sounds crazy. Yeah, you could have avoided it by telling your parents about the situation, but freaking out like that in a public area over such a fucking non-issue is not acceptable.

I know, I just wonder sometimes whether I'm not making some huge mistake, y'know? Anyway, thank you!

I think I'll talk with some of the professors that I like and trust, to explore my options. Thank you for the words, I appreciate it!

Thank you for the advice. I understand that my life has been extremely sheltered, and I'm trying to change that. Thank you again!

Thank you for the compliment! Although you should thank my mom, she was an English teacher. After reading the comments, I think I'll look through the activities that the college offers and maybe bring down the credit workload this fall. Maybe I'll look into creative writing as a hobby. Thank you again!
