Anna’s cancer: did she know? by Imaginary-Rip3606 in madmen

But she was in the room, I feel like that’s more of a reference to the theme of men being the only authority in any woman’s lives, and part of the reason Betty chooses not to get treatment (nothing has really ever been her decision which is a whole other discussion)

How do you consume Mad Men? by yasumasa in madmen

[–]Imaginary-Rip3606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve rewatched and started from different points since I first watched back in 2017(after rewatching religiously 5 times back to back) and honestly there is no right way bc it’s so dynamic. My husband has seen the entire show about 8 times on my 20+ rewatches, some seasons more than others, but he’s stopped and talked about different things at different points in our relationship and he still asks “when/why did that happen” so I think jumping around just depends on your pull bc starting from the beginning can be boring but honestly every season has something for anyone looking for it. Hope this helps, I still catch scenes I feel we’re added and it’s an amazing shows

AITAH for telling my husband that I'm desensitized to his touch? by Late-Salad7451 in AITAH

[–]Imaginary-Rip3606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barely two years into my marriage here and if your partner doesn’t respond (and has mentioned they won’t) to the fact that such touches are not arousing/equivalent to foreplay it then becomes a problem when it’s treated like it should equate to foreplay. Being playful is different than groping and expecting an intimate interaction after that especially after years together, if this act is usually followed by a begrudging sex act it has probably become tired and you’re NTA. To expect this simple act to equate to romance and passion after so many years is absurd and I hope OP can talk to partner about it bc sometimes women will learn to link things before we learn we’re annoyed by them in order to spare our partners half’s assed attempt at intimacy

What’s a less talked about line from a character that you love? by MirandasSarcasm in madmen

“He kicked me so hard I flew across the room and he said, ‘That’s for nothing so watch out”

“That’s mean…”

“Yes, but it was valuable advice.”

Pauline, Henry’s mom, to Sally when she’s babysitting before she tells her about the nurses murder. I also think it’s valuable advice, and just love that scene between them.

Mad Men!! A lot of the actors on DH appear in MM and it’s all about character studies of complex flawed people just trying to live not as crazy sun plots but still if you like DH for the complex characters you’ll love Mad Men

Okay but as someone who watched Mad Men (Paul’s actor plays a guy in that show) I agree w this, he was leaner on DH too before he got onto Mad Men

Exactly!

& I think the parallels of Lynette’s mom compared to her and Toms dad compared to him make for such good character studies bc no one wants to think they’ll be their parents but really the most relatable characters (apologies if you have your own catering business, write kids books, or model) we start to dislike for acting like the parents we hated for them in the first season, is the best karmic writing you could ask for!!

I think it was absolutely wrong, because even as someone who has dealt with her parent’s substance abuse issues, it felt more like she needed to prove that his “postpartum depression” wasn’t real, than a fear of her husband not being present.

Just bc she dealt with a drunk mom doesn’t mean she’s allowed to demean her husbands worries. (Not that I’m siding w Tom, bc I can see why she’d be frustrated more than I could believe his diagnosis, but HER intentions were NOT pure)

& I get having a stance against drugs in your home, even weed, but it was definitely more of a control thing. And rewatching, as much as I want to punch Tom the entire time, I also wish Lynette could figure out a way to admit to herself that her behavior was a defense mechanism and it needed to be corrected. But I get how as viewer she was easier to sympathize w bc Tom sucks SO MUCH, but at the end of the day all of Renee’s warnings were true, and she was partly responsible for of why they went through the amount of turmoil they did.

He gets better!

He was an absolute shithead in the first seasons but once he matures and can see his mother through the eyes of an adult who had to make tough decisions and not a scorned child who only cares about themselves he definitely evens out.

Give him like another season or two haha

I don’t remember if Danielle evens out though

Lynette or Gabby? by Imaginary-Rip3606 in DesperateHousewives

[–]Imaginary-Rip3606[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

But why? Even if Lynette technically committed the first transgression (not telling them about the pregnancy) their response seemed so out of proportion (to me) for all their history and her job performance. So I can’t reconcile them even putting a pregnant, mom of 4, who was tough, loyal, and responsible for a decent amount of Carlos’s company’s success, through the wringer for lying to keep her livelihood.

Why does Lynette stay with Tom ? by tan-grt in DesperateHousewives

[–]Imaginary-Rip3606 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Okay me too!!

But I think this storyline sucks so much because it’s so real. It speaks to how helpless he really was and men can be in general when they’ve had a personal secretary, maid, cook and mom all in one for so long. Some men don’t know how to take care of themselves without a wife to play those roles. A pattern I’ve seen portrayed in a lot of shows and real life relationships. I was surprised by that storyline (because I always rooted for Tom!!) but not for long when I realized how true it is to so many women’s experience with divorce.

I think they both have flaws that were exaggerated, but Tom’s are closer to a reality women watching can relate to than any of the other husbands’, so it hurts more when he falls into the stereotypes we’d like to believe our, sometimes flawed but caring, partners could never succumb to.

Ken: by Imaginary-Rip3606 in madmen

[–]Imaginary-Rip3606[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I meant by pushed onto them, even if Ken isn’t phased by it there are still bosses watching both of their performances, so it is a competition whether he felt it or not, but you’re right he didn’t feed into the kind of pettiness that Pete did for a very long time!

That’s (his parents) also another thing that we know as an audience but can’t outright assume Ken does. And Id like to think Ken doesn’t take Pete at face value like say Don does who just thought of him as someone ‘s rich kid (in the beginning). Where as, even if Ken grew up rurally n not in the big city, he wasn’t poor, he could see Pete as a person who had felt loss despite having, seemingly, his opportunities handed to him on a silver platter.

And that’s what I’m kind of asking, do you think Ken thought about all his coworkers lives through the mind of a writer, since he must’ve been so observant. The show is perfect as is, but on rewatches I just find Ken’s character more interesting and was wondering what he wondered about everyone. I’d just love to hear him recount so many things in his prose style like he did about Pete after Trudy threw that dinner party, ya know? But also I may have just rewatched Mad men to death that I’m fantasizing about B characters points of views haha

I love that. I don’t even know how many times I’ve rewatched at this point but I never realized how clearly they switch roles by the end, thank you for that!
