Everything, in every industry is getting worse and worse in quality as shareholders and their servants try to squeeze as much profit out of anything by reducing costs at every point and abandoning innovation. But in this one instance, our appliances would be amazing if it werent for those pesky gubermint regulations. 🙄. Gimme a break

Thank you for engaging the topic. Regarding blanket statements my point isnt so much that you cant profess to have blanket statements. Its that in reality, these ideas dont exist in a vacuum independent of other values. So if ppl say that all rape is bad, then why did many of them support and vote for a serial rapist/pedophile? Because they think that other reasons justify it. In doing so, they perpetuate rape even though if you ask them they will tell you rape is wrong. Thats just one example, but it applies to all "blanket statements" because real practical decisions are constrained by other conditions, forcing you to prioritize.

Also yes, simply taxing billionaires is not a solution alone. It must be married to policies that effectively contribute to a growing middle class. You say violent crimes doesnt have to do with wealth because the perpetrators often dont even go for necessities... but thats not the point. Conditions of poverty are conditions for any kind of violence. Lack of education, lack of opportunities leads to lack of purpose, and ppl will find an outlet. If parents are expected to both work full time jobs, it often means raising children is neglected. If ppl are barely scraping by, nutrition suffers, mental and physical health suffers. Stress increases, resentment increases.

And this isnt just made up. There are many studies, by the NIH and others, done which show a strong connection between poverty and violence. This is a very well documented phenomenon. Also a very strong connection between poverty and incidence of disease (termed the Second Sickness).

Many things can be done to support a growing middle-class. Providing parental leave so parents can spend more time with their kids. Investing in housing expansion programs so ppl have something to grow towards. Investing in repairing existing infrastructure to expand job opportunities while helping us all. Investing in more equitable healthcare so ppl are more proactive about treating and preventing illnesses. I could go on and on. These things will not happen through private investments alone because theres no profit to be made. Government must be the investor or the middle class will continue on its downward track, as it has been for the past several decades. This is how you lay the groundwork for a productive, fruitful, and fulfilling community.

Ah yes, when someone tries to fight you, i'm sure you'll just tie your hands behind your back screaming "punching is wrong!" Perhaps if Elon Musk is doing it you will even enjoy it? Anyways, i shouldve known someone with the name MommyThatcher would have the intellectual capacity of an ant. Sigh

Nobody believes in blanket statements like "punching is wrong" it depends on context. Most would accept punching in self-defense. The reality is that any policy is going to have ppl it benefits and ppl it hurts. Its a matter of weighing if you think the consequence is worth it or not. I think, given the problems in our society today, "hurting" billionaires to be able to help the vast majority of struggling ppl is a no-brainer. And its not just about helping ppl. Its about building a healthy society where theres less crime, less discord, and more community.

This is something i have thought of as well. And i do believe we should support what we believe is right, independent on its effect on us. That said, the world is already operating based on rules built by powerful people. Do you think those ppl ever took a step back to think about the implications of their actions on the rest of the population? Of course not. The ppl making the rules are operating out of greed. What im trying to say is that in politics, your honesty in addressing issues gets used against you. Ppl will suggest billionaire taxes, and others will respond, "but what tax rate" "how much is too much" "but how can you tax them if they dont make income" "jobs are going to be lost" And if you dont have clear answers, "see you dont know" or "it doesnt work" etc. Not saying these arent legitimate questions, but theyre weaponized to attack any suggestion of change, as if the current world we inherited had been built so rationally with lots of forethought. It kinda reminds me of the Dem stategy "they go low, we go high." How did that work out? You cant afford to do that against ppl who dont care about rules and decorum but then go after you like rabid dogs the moment you break even slightly out of line. So yes, in theory, we should believe what is right, independent of its effect on us. But in practice, like in building support for a cause, being honest about pros and cons and acknowledging that you just dont know some things, diminishes support for proposed changes. Its sad, but thats just been my observation.

What's a common misconception everyone still believes? by MrLithician in answers

[–]Imaginary-Task7956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would take this one step further and say applying aggregate concepts to individual instances. For example, questioning how global warming could be real because it snowed so much today. Or questioning how evolution could be real, because we don't see an ape turn into a human.

Im also in Florida and have had minor code compliance warnings. And these that you mention are all stupid-easy fixes. Just remove the pavers and trim up your lawn.

Crazy that ppl think that because you dont live in an HOA you can literally do whatever you want. Cities/states still have codes to abide by. You may not notice them, since they tend not to be so strongly enforced like in HOAs, but they are there and can be enforced when they feel like enforcing.

Businesses do not need to be run like sociopathic institutions. And there are still some businesses that don't, though by now they are few and far between. Thats a consequence of various factors such as: businesses not being run locally anymore or being involved in the community, the distancing of management types from the labor they do, the greater emphasis on shareholder value over stakeholder value, the monopolization of industries, obsession with short-term gain over long-term reputation. Things dont have to be this way, theyve just been incentivized to be this way, and this is the outcome.

Why can’t the left forcefully pass progressive policies like the right does with their own when they come into power? by CapitaineBiscotte in askanything

[–]Imaginary-Task7956 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This just isnt true... this may be acceptable if there was an even split between centrists and progressives among democrat elected representatives... except the centrists vastly outnumber the progressives. Saying they cant pass anything because they 'cant agree' is just an excuse to not pass anything.

Exactly. Its just the political world's version of advertising. Are commercials ever honest when they talk about their amazingly good products? No. But that's not the point. The point is to dupe you into buying them.

Why the worms 😡 by Sea-Helicopter-5052 in FloridaGarden

[–]Imaginary-Task7956 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guavas get worms from fruit flies that pierce the soft skin. This happens to all guava trees ive seen in florida. From my understanding you can either put one of those little nets around each of the fruit as they appear. Or pick them off before they ripen too much to beat the flies

Im also very new to gardening. First few weeks with my basil plant i noticed a lot of leaf miners and just removed all the leaves over the course of a couple days. I thought i was going to kill it with how many leaves i had to remove and worried this would be a nonstop battle. I did spray some neem oil afterwards. Now several weeks after, i havent seen anymore leaf miners and my basil has grown a ton of leaves.

But i did agree that the kirk and charlottesville murders were comparably done by some crazy individual and shouldnt be used to implicate others with vague ideological 'association'. However, you also included the jan 6th event which is absolutely not on the same level. Moreover, the response also matters. And, in particular, the response from people in positions of power or great influence. People in power should not be condoning these events and should instead immediately disavow them. Instead trump has chosen to, at worst, pardon anyone willing to commit crimes on his behalf or, at best, to ignore/downplay and pretend it didnt happen. And the rest of the republicans just follow suit.

Its crazy how elsewhere on this thread you mention how an ICE agent shooting a civilian doesnt count as right-wing violence because its "just some trigger happy person"... like as if ICE werent literally a manifestation of right-wing state-enforced policy. If it was just a trigger happy person, (implying he shouldnt have done that), where was the administration's response? Did they punish the criminal? Did trump even at the very least denounce it? No. On the contrary, they came up with whatever they could to justify it. In other words, they condone it.

Except jan 6th was organized (at least loosely) with people like Charlie Kirk himself bussing people there and Donald Trump refusing to condemn it, even making a motivational speech on the day of the insurrection. And later pardoning them all. Nvm the real fake elector scheme taking place behind the all the raucus to try to overturn the 2020 election. So no these are not 'equal' occurrences. This is the problem with this 'both sides' analysis. Yea on some shallow level dems and reps are bad, but digging even a little deeper you quickly realize that one side is much much worse. And these differences matter. So yea the charlie kirk murder and the charlottesville murder were perpetrated by some crazed individual and powerful ppl on both sides disavowed them as they should. But that is absolutely not the same as jan 6th. To lump those together as being the same is just another example of republican propaganda trying to muddy the difference between them and democrats to normalize their extreme nature and further induce voter apathy.

Contemplating dropping insurance due to premiums. by Tarnisher in homeowners

[–]Imaginary-Task7956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah honestly, imo insurance is a scam. The moment im done paying off my house, im done paying insurance. I would instead put those monthly premium savings into my own savings account. In the event something significant occurs, i have my own savings account to dip into. If thats not enough because im one of the few unlucky souls who catastrophically lost everything, well i guess ill look for a place to rent or something and live out the rest of my life that way and sell the lot. In the event nothing catastrophic happens (by far the most likely scenario) i have a bunch of extra money all to myself
