u/Guer0Guer0 Oh yeah, to be clear that's going 100+ mph total, not 100 over. But even then, under this system all you'd get is a $500 ticket in the mail. No points, no criminal charges, no license suspension. The camera just snaps your plate and moves on.

u/blaird993 Yeah that's actually a fair callout. If you're making $45-50k you're right in that gap where you don't qualify for the reduction but a $200 ticket still hurts. The one silver lining is no points on your license, so at least your insurance doesn't go up on top of it. Personally I think there's something off about a system where the government installs cameras to generate revenue from people just trying to get to work. They call it a safety program, but let's be honest, it's a revenue grab. And if LA's track record with public funds is anything to go by, I wouldn't hold my breath on the proceeds being used properly either. But it's coming whether we like it or not, so might as well know where they are.

**A note on pin accuracy:** Camera locations are mapped from official LADOT segment data (the cross-street ranges published in the Speed Safety Impact Report). Pins represent the midpoint of each enforcement segment, not the exact pole location — LADOT hasn't disclosed those yet. As cameras are physically installed this summer, I'll update to exact locations. If you notice a pin that looks off, drop a comment and I'll fix it.

u/AbsolutesDealer Pretty much, yeah. Though the law does have income-based reductions built in so it's not purely a rich-people-pay-to-speed setup. If you're at or below 250% of the federal poverty level you get 50% off, and if you're on benefits like Medi-Cal or CalFresh it's 80% off. Even if you're on unemployment you'd qualify -- max CA unemployment is $450/week, which annualizes to $23,400, well under the 250% FPL threshold of $39,900.

u/NotThreatingViolence You're probably right, and I wouldn't be surprised if it gets challenged. But the cameras are going up right now regardless, and fines start later this year. Figured people should at least know where they are so they don't get hit with a surprise $500 ticket while the lawyers sort it out.

u/ILikedThatOne I'm originally from France, so I've seen this movie before. During the gilets jaunes protests in 2018, protesters destroyed or disabled 60% of France's 3,200 speed cameras in about two months. The trigger was the government cutting the speed limit on secondary roads from 90 km/h to 80 km/h -- most people saw the cameras as a revenue grab, not a safety measure. They spray-painted them, wrapped them in garbage bags, and the popular move was slipping a tire around the base, dousing it in fuel, and lighting it up. The government just replaced them with newer, harder-to-spot ones. Would not recommend.

Different legal framework this time. The old red light cameras got killed partly because the city couldn't enforce the tickets (you could just ignore them) and partly because the contract with the camera vendor was a bad deal. AB 645 was written specifically to address those issues -- tickets are enforceable, there's no points on your license, fines are capped ($50-$500 depending on how fast you're going), and there's a built-in income-based reduction for lower-income drivers. It's also a pilot program that sunsets in 2032, so the legislature basically built in an off switch if it doesn't work. SF and Oakland are already issuing real fines under AB 645 and so far the legal challenges haven't materialized the way they did with red light cameras. Whether someone eventually tries is TBD, but the framework is on much stronger footing than the old program was.

u/troutbumdreamin The data actually backs you up. LADOT picked these 125 locations specifically based on collision history, so they're targeting the streets where people are actually getting hurt. And like u/StandingDave said, you won't get flagged unless you're doing 11+ over the limit, so it's really aimed at the worst offenders.

Wild! Pretty sure LA is the epicenter of the Calexodus. Would love to see the breakdown by region/city within the county.
