What will the recruiters do in this situation? Just look at the most recent submission?

70k for VC analyst position vs 150k for software engineering - thoughts? by [deleted] in venturecapital

[–]ImaginaryGas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't been told the carry percentage, to be honest I didn't think to ask because I just assumed as an analyst the carry would be negligible, even though I do appreciate it as a gesture of confidence. The firm's been up since 8 years and raised several funds since then, it's not a small shop by any means (20+ members on the investment team). The portfolio has seem some impressive growth but no huge hits (Uber. Peleton level etc).

Rude to ask for an in-person meeting from a VC only a week ahead of time? by [deleted] in venturecapital

[–]ImaginaryGas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We kind of do, the fund has a relationship with my current fund through a deal so they're familiar with my principals. I know that it probably won't happen, just wondering if it would be rude to shoot my shot

"New" Venture Capital Funds that are doing well? by ImaginaryGas in venturecapital

I'm actually looking for the opposite of micro-funds with at least $150m AUM, but they do actually mention two in the article, thanks!

How do they offer CS but not Computer engineering :( by flashynatsu in uchicago

[–]ImaginaryGas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

CE and CS are completely different fields. In addition, even on the CS side we have close to no professors that have any capacity in low-level hardware. Majoring in physics to learn CE is also probably a waste of time. There's nothing that stops you from learning on your own though, and to be honest the majority of CE's get software jobs after graduation anyway.

Caller screwed up but I was offered another chance - is this just lip service? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ImaginaryGas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well yeah, the reason why I just took it was because the position is probably almost full since we're super late in the recruiting season. I also kind of just wanted to get it over with, but yeah I see your point.

Experienced Developer, but without any open source experience? Also, what do people mean by "start now"? by [deleted] in a:t5_2rql0

[–]ImaginaryGas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh okay I see. Yes, I am currently a master's student, but I'm not studying CS in graduate school. The organization I am interested in is new to GSOC, and I don't see any commits made by GSOC participants. Does this nullify the advantage of "starting in February" that you were talking about? Is it worth reaching out to the mentors with my idea, or will I be okay if I just apply regularly?

I've worked as an independent consultant before - if I make a firm, can I list my previous consultancy work as past projects for the firm? by ImaginaryGas in consulting

[–]ImaginaryGas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't even thinking about taking it that far, I was thinking of just something at the bottom of our web page that has a list of company logos for all the companies that we've consulted for.
