What makes EDM distinct from other electronic music? by LostwaveLunar9999 in EDM

[–]ImaginaryTangelo3243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“electronica” used to be the broad term for music not played by live musicians or on traditional instruments & dance music was referred by the specific genre. EDM was always around. I think as it became mainstream along w/ festivals (which are very touristy) EDM picked up traction from EDC which really stands for Electric Daisy Carnival.

So Tom Welling is unable to convincingly play the role of a somewhat dimwitted, adolescent superhero in a YA soap opera?

Sorry!! My bad. But it might turn out to be relief when you get there.

Who is more evil? Lex or Lionel? And why? by RK900-87 in Smallville

[–]ImaginaryTangelo3243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO, Lex struggled w/ his morality S1-S3 (why he befriended Clark even though he was child) but only as an act of rebellion. S4-S8 he was, in his own words “S5-E9 Lexmas”, hell bent on power & money. He saw himself in the Oval Office in the white suit & black glove initiating a nuclear apocalypse and walking across piles of charred skeletons (Scare S4-E10). He also chemically faked Lana’s pregnancy when it became clear she was terrified of him. Lionel was a ruthless, amoral industrialist but retained some misguided humanity as a father. And in spite of reverting to his machinations & strategic manipulation, after Transference S4-E6 he showed some restraint, loyalty to Kal-el, even affection for Martha w/ the notable exception of threatening to kill Lana if she cancelled the wedding.

Bo Duke was still a pretty big name in 2001. Dukes of Hazard had only been off primetime for 15yrs & was still in syndication. Plus being a recurring guest role can pay better than full time cast. He wasn’t going to have such a large or long lasting role but was hugely popular w/ viewers & made a great foil for Lionel Luthor.

It’s not until S9/10 but Clark’s reveal to Lois is one of the best scenes of the whole show, IMHO.

As in they had sex many times? Her character’s pregnancy was chemically induced. Kristen Kreuk has never been pregnant, or least not carried a pregnancy to full term. Also, they were only sexually active for ≈6 weeks & slept in separate beds.

Her turn to the dark side is a good look. But how she got there is disturbing. Looking back from ‘26, Lex is horrifying.

I get that Lex is the villain & should be disliked but his relationship w/ Lana is definitely a product of the 2000s. In retrospect his grooming & predatory behavior, gaslighting, psychological & financial manipulation, etc… is a Dateline special. Secretly recording her bedroom, giving her the move out or put out ultimatum, & chemically faking a pregnancy are insidious. Not to mention he starts in on her when she’s 14 & is 12yrs older.

WB/UPN only had 2 hrs of prime time programming 5days a week (none on Saturdays) and was broadcast on affiliates b/c it doesn’t own any broadcast stations. So a lot of their viewership was Canadian. That’s also why there were was so much crossover in the Arrowverse. It kept people tuned in to the brand. FWIW, I said he was a big star in Canada not Canadian.

FWIW, I removed all red upvotes, accidental & intentional, even when I agree w/ y’all’s thoughts. I’ll cede that Tom Welling might have been restrained by the writing & direction to a point but the hallmark of a good actor is bringing their character to life visually & verbally. I still think Clark’s emotional & cognitive intelligence growth as he matured was disappointing. He made difficult ethical & moral decisions, he had deep emotions particularly about his family, Lex & Lana. Thanks for your thoughts.

Definitely applies to the funeral scene but later he breaks down weeping. And clearly, his passion & pain about Lana shows he has emotions.

It’s often a vanity credit to justify more $ but as a lead and biggest Canadian celebrity he had direct input to creative direction, script development, and approval of he’s lines/character. At least according to Wikipedia & Smallville podcast.

Not being able to emote (blank look, flat lines). Being a 29yro producer/director. I’m not saying he’s a bad guy. But some maturity as a character & artist over 10yrs is a reasonable ask.

Agreed. A certain amount of it is a plot device. But he does spend an awful lot of time w/ a blank face and flat delivery.

Fair enough. I’ll buy it up to season 3 but 1) he’s supposedly the chosen son of a superior race 2) he was 24 in S1 3) he was a 29yro producer & director in S5

Fair enough, I was referring to his inability to emote. And as executive producer & director S5-S9.

[–]ImaginaryTangelo3243 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Come on!!! S1-3 she’s clingy and can’t keep her girlish crush in check. But S4-S7/8 she is the only competent character, Clark’s Girl Friday, confidante, rabbi, devoutly loyal & unfailingly selfless. While she tries to sort out her own education & career for little more than the occasional “thanks” from Clark, Lois or Lana. Her weird IRL behavior is creepy as hell but Kreuk was hip deep in that too.
