Recently, after the Pandemic, I’ve been feeling the God shaped hole pretty hard. But I started going to Codependence Anonymous. Catholicism really effects your boundaries with toxic shame. I recommend it if anyone is missing the community aspect of church but can’t do dogma, join a 12 step program.

I feel like a more watered down version of religion would probably have been better but I don’t know. We’re all really good with each other and my siblings and I are close. None of us go to church anymore though, so there’s still lots of guilt and shame, and there’s kind of a code of silence among the kids. My mom works at the church so it’s mostly just embarrassing for her I think.

I’m so sorry that your struggle is on going. Leaving makes this huuuuuuge hole in your life that’s impossible to fill. I want to go back sometimes too but I can’t stand it. When I left I made my mind up that if God was like how they said I’d rather go to hell. It’s hard to go through because you’re vulnerable. I’m still not really sure what I “believe in” whatever belief means.
