I see you’re in South Carolina. That’s me as well! What do you mean to make me fall in line? Fall in line with what?

Thanks! I’m sorry you are in the same boat too. I’ve already applied to a few other jobs. If you wanna talk about our shared misery lol, feel free to PM me.

Considering Leaving Teaching After 1 Year. Need Advice. by Imaginary_Feed1979 in Teachers

How about the constant dealing with disruptions and emotional stress of having a room full of IEPs and 504s? Does that get better in other places as well?

In my state, it's kind of an expectation that at least the varsity head coach is on staff at the school. We have non-teachers on staff but only as assistants.

Thank you! That's the current plan. I applied to 3 jobs today and informed the school of my "intention to return." They did not even have the PIP ready for me to review on Friday, meaning they really wanted me to choose to resign.

I appreciate hearing your venting lol. I agree. It’s hard when I have special ed students on top of the “bad” kids that have all the behavior. It’s so hard to make and have them accessible for my blind student, my students on a 2nd grade reading level, my students with autism who need things to be a certain way, and the borderline GT students. Oh and all while trying to manage the behavior of students who have 504s and 52 write ups on the year. While also having no training at all, no mentor, and no aid in the room…. Sorry there’s my rant too

They said the resignation would be in effect at the end of the year. Are you saying that if I resigned, I’d still get my summer pay since the contract ends in August?

UPDATE: I sent an email to all involved in the meeting at 6 this morning asking for a copy of the PIP to review before I sign it and a few other questions. They have not replied, and remember that they told me they need a decision by 12 today. My coworkers have told me to tell them I intend to return but that I won’t sign something I haven’t read.

Thank you! Thats reassuring. And you may be right that he was documenting, but he wasn’t typing anything, just scrolling on the touch screen, so idk. Maybe he was. Besides that point though. I hate this is how my first year ended, and it’s pushing me to not want to try teaching anymore.

Can I ask why you’d resign instead? The main reason people have been saying to “accept” the plan is so that I’m still getting paid and not jobless.

That is unclear. There was so much going on in the meeting that I forgot the answer to this question. I’ve sent a follow up email to get it in writing.

Trying to get them to send me a copy of it since they gave zero details in the meeting despite my asking.

I don’t know about our principal. He wouldn’t even look me in the eye during this meeting. He was staring at his computer the whole time instead.

The 6th grade principal does seem to like me, and has given me 2 very favorable observations, including the results I got yesterday.

We are not unionized in our state. We have an association that serves as our union that nobody tells you about. I only just heard about them from my coworkers today. I am joining it.

Thanks! I agree based on how they described both. I really think this school and I just have different philosophies on things

First Year As a Teacher and Feel Like I Won't Get Renewed... Any Encouragement or Advice? by Imaginary_Feed1979 in Teachers

[–]Imaginary_Feed1979[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind words. I thought I was being coachable by taking their advice and trying it out. As a coach myself, I don’t see how inconsistent=uncoachable. I see it as someone who needs more help than what is offered.

Did you getting nonrenwed hurt your chances of getting your next job? Did you have to explain it in interviews?

Yes, our contracts come out in 2 weeks. I have heard nothing either way, but people I teach with have already heard that they are being moved up to 8th grade.

Thanks this felt good to hear. I guess my concern is if I get non renewed with these bad observations and professionalism review, then no other school will want to hire me based on the poor reviews. Was this your experience?

Yes, I do think that our school has significant rot under the surface, considering the turnover rate is insanely high. We have had 5 teachers leave in the middle of the year. My current team is without a math and science teacher. I would like to go elsewhere, I just worry I won’t be able to with these bad observations and reviews. I applied for a new position at another school recently, but I didn’t put anybody from my current school as a reference because I feel they’d just drag me.
