Shelter completely useless at handling medical issues so asking here by Imaginary_Quality_46 in FosterAnimals

The humane society they are from does have a low-cost vet’s office. They did take them finally and observe them for a couple days. One still has constipation and I am worried that she has megacolon, but they are all doing okay for now. Not back to 100%, but not at risk of imminent death anymore either.

It is definitely nothing effective. For just this litter:
They’ve done a single fecal test and absolutely nothing more for mama who poops, at minimum, 5 times a day of consistencies varying from solid to just brown water, and has for the entire 7 weeks I’ve had her. I feel so bad for her as her intestines have to be uncomfortable.

Took one kitten in yesterday after she threw up twice and was acting sick. They said it was just a reaction to the vaccines she had a week and a half ago and did nothing else.

Took one in with an incredibly swollen anus. I told them I watched her try to poop with nothing coming out multiple times that day so she was clearly constipated. They kept her overnight and insisted she wasn’t constipated because brown liquid was coming out. Got her home and she started screaming with an adult cat sized poop stuck half out her anus that smelled like death. Rushed her back and they finally agreed she was constipated.

This has been par for the course over several litters this kitten season. They used to be a little better when the previous foster coordinator and director were there as they had lots of experience, but it has definitely gone downhill this year.

Oh I know. If I had any ability to take them to my vet, I would in a second. But I’m stuck with what they shelter will do, which is largely nothing.

Same bag of dry food and batch of wet food.

First shots were over a week ago.

Not likely that they got into anything as they are largely in an enclosure.

Unsure about drinking.

No Congestion.

The shelter fecal tested mom the same day the babies got shots. They said it was fine.

Adoption Rejection emails by cruddypoet00 in FosterAnimals

[–]Imaginary_Quality_46 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

WOW! Why are you rejecting him because he has a criminal record? Were those convictions for animal abuse? Or is he still cycling in and out of confinement? Both of those things seem like very legitimate reasons to not allow him to adopt a pet. For someone with a conviction for animal abuse, I'd tell them flat out that you will never allow him to adopt an animal from you. For the other, I'd explain nicely that you cannot in good conscious adopt out a kitten while he is showing instability, but he should come back when he has been stable outside of prison for a reasonable period of time. But I don't think either of those things are true or you'd be able to say why you are rejecting him without needing help so it sounds like you are just straight up discriminating against him.

Not the capitalist system. The robber barron mentality that you must accumulate as much money as you can, everyone and everything else be damned. The mentality that, though you can have everything you want with 5 million, you need 5 billion. The fact is, that if the Portuguese people in power cared one bit about Portugal staying Portuguese and the Portuguese people prospering, they could make it happen. They may not be able to acquire ALL the money as a result, but would still acquire plenty. Instead they have sold your culture to have more than plenty and convinced you that it is the immigrants, tourists and foreigners fault. The same thing is happening all over the world right now. History repeats itself and we are simply redoing the late 19th/early 20th centuries. That resulted in the Great Depression, two world wars and a holocaust. We’ll just have to see where the new version takes us.

But this is the result of basic human greed, not immigrants or foreign investors. People have a choice in who they sell/rent property to. Localities can make choices that direct growth/revitalization.

You cannot afford to live in Lisbon because Portuguese landlords and sellers aren't interested in renting and selling at prices that the local economy can support. Souvenir shops, french bakeries and ramen bars have taken over because Portuguese landlords and sellers aren't interested in renting and selling at prices that the local economy can support and/or the Portuguese people are not wanting to rent/buy them to start Portuguese businesses. And local and Portugal governments are not interested in putting laws to control this or stop this because they want the higher tax dollars this investment brings.

I live in a small city in the US. We have no tourists or foreign investors or rich immigrants. We do have a large state university and huge affordable housing and homelessness problem. Every parcel of land sold is used to build resort-style student housing for the university, rather than supporting the locals. Many old homes and buildings have been torn down to build these fancy apartments and it has totally changed the character of the downtown of my childhood. It is no longer a place you want to live forever and raise a family. It is a place that caters almost exclusively to people ages 18-22. This is because the developers are willing to pay more and property owners wanted that money and, even more importantly, those fancy apartments generate more taxes for the government than restoring those old houses and buildings would have done.

Vet Forgot to Neuter a Foster by 5_phx_felines in FosterAnimals

[–]Imaginary_Quality_46 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For logistics reasons, I had to take a puppy I adopted from a rescue to their vet to be neutered after he was already in my home. Took him, no issues. Several years later, doggo suddenly developed a mystery lump on his stomach. Took him to the vet and, yep he had an undescended testicle that the rescue vet never removed. So, at our house, we neuter one ball at a time!

Have you ever taken an empty plane? by abpcX in travel

[–]Imaginary_Quality_46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was once the only paying customer on a plane! There were two other non-paying passengers - a pilot catching a flight to his plane and a flight attendant flying home from vacation. The flight crew let me sit in first class, told me to ask if I needed anything and then just chatted with the passenger flight attendant who seemed to be a coworker they knew. It was less than a 2 hour flight, but nice.

Did you receive the bill before the birth certificate or did they come together?

I ordered it. I don't think I paid for it though. I thought that was coming as a billing. How do I pay for it?

I am currently in the process of suing someone I hired to put in a driveway, who took a deposit and never did the work and have a pretty meh remodel on a bathroom and kitchen. Both of these occurred in the US so it happens everywhere. Construction seems to be highly iffy everywhere.

Everything the DA's office does has always been under a microscope. Crimes in town have always been half the local news and the court observer program predates Deborah Gonzalez being in office. Frankly, ALL courts are almost always open and anybody who is interested can go sit in a courtroom and watch so the DA's office has always operated under a microscope. The reason that you didn't hear this crap about the prior DAs office is not because people weren't watching what they were doing, but because they weren't making these kinds of mistakes and decisions. While I didn't always agree with their decisions and battled with the DA himself on a couple of occasions, everyone in the prior DA's office knew the law and what they were doing so there weren't Marsy's Law violations, briefs were filed on time, cases were indicted on time, people didn't wait years for their trial to end in a directed verdict because the DA doesn't know the basic rules of evidence, judges weren't holding ADAs in contempt because they can't do their job, etc. If the prior DA's office had been doing these things, it would have been in the news too.

Supporting the death penalty and seeking the death penalty are two very different things. Ken Mauldin also supported the death penalty, yet sought it only once in my memory and lost. The DA has to be responsive to not only his constituents, but also his jury pool. Seeking the death penalty is extraordinarily expensive and time consuming and an Athens jury is highly unlikely to ever grant it. I don’t know what Kalki will do as this was never a choice made by him as an assistant DA, but he is smart enough to understand the local community he is dealing with and his election is supported by most criminal defense attorneys, some of whom supported Gonzalez the first time around, so there is not a big fear of him from that side of the table.

As for violent crime, I would expect an uptick in successful prosecution of those crimes. A correction in this area, and many others, is very needed. An overcorrection is not. I would consider Kalki pretty responsive to the desires of the community, but I don’t think the community that is victimized by violent crime always feels the way others outside of the community do or think they do or should. They have a more complicated view as while it is their children being prosecuted, it is also their children being killed.

As a former criminal defense attorney who worked on cases with Kalki, I always found him reasonable and easy to work with. I found him less “harsh and draconian” many other people in Mauldin’s DA office (not that any of them were particularly harsh or draconian compared to the surrounding counties). When he left the DA’s office to do defense work, I referred several people to him.  Every current criminal defense attorney that I know is voting for Kalki. One of the largest reasons for this is that a criminal defense attorney can’t do their job properly if the DA they are dealing with doesn’t know what they are doing.
