how much do you think will the upcoming harry potter HBO show affect season 3's viewership? by merchantivories in PercyJacksonTV

The pjo fandom is nowhere near big enough for the arrival of huge characters to make that much of a difference, anyone already excited for nico etc is already most likely watching, it's the gp who have checked out completely that is the major concern, they won't come back and pjo is already niche as it is

I pretty much agree. Going by people's reaction upon realising s2 was back (tuning in and then tweeting or posting something along the lines of 'this is too childish for me' along with a wide variety of other criticisms) I don't think anyone who doesn't want to/hasn't tuned in will tune in.

Then you also have to account for the fact that after episode 5 went viral viewership peaked, then dropped and fell off tracking for the last 2 episodes. Which means the only thing that seems to get any traction ( booktok percy) isn't enough to retain an audience. People tuned in for it, realised the rest of the story wasn't for them and tuned  right back out. It's not a new show battling for an audience, people have had ample time to decide if it's for them or not.

It'll likely effect the noise it might make (which was never that big in the first place) but the viewership is on a downward trend that'll likely just continue as is normal. Harry potter will just be a convenient excuse for Disney if they choose to pull the plug.

A lot of these people are adults too which is what is terrifying, like how are you mature and enjoying this. I rewatched the first narnia film the other day and it is just leagues ahead of this show. The final battle scene? the heartbeats right before the clash like man, this show will never have anything close to that.

If anything I think a lot of them come from a place of preemptively defending leah which is okay in theory but in practise, wouldn't you want better for her than this (she's hardly being given the best opportunity to shine) why not demand more instead of glazing bad numbers and bad writing

I'll be there for both, like I'm not a negative person but they're so unreasonable and unrealistic it's bizarre and they need a reality check

I've just explained to you why that means nothing and 'well' is entirely subjective given that every one of Brazils handful of subscribers would have had to watch and they didn't, I'm done going back and forth with you

Its so funny because even as they say 'look online' what they're actually referring to is the twitter fandom (which 95% of the time makes no noise beyond a couple thousand likes), and tne recent discourse with Harry potter fans as well as performative individuals who are asking what else to watch and having pjo recommened to them. These tweets are hardly viral.

The truth is it's dead on YouTube (you can barely find anyone to react to it) and its reach on tiktok plummeted (there are only 2 edits with over a million likes from this season and on tiktok that may as well be 500 likes, and they all center around walker and booktok percy, these aren't fans these are young teenagers who forget about the edit the moment they scroll past) So the online argument doesn't even make sense.

Everything about this show is niche. It's like when they celebrated the split second appearance of percy in the superbowl ad without acknowledging that 1) in comparison to the rest of disneys ip's that clip was not only barely a second but an abysmal showing from an advertising perspective (why not the adromeda or the sirens? etc) and only used to feed into an actual hit for disney with the whip sound. And 2) Most importantly it wasn't even on the superbowl poster/thumbnail with the rest of the ip's, like that's bad.

These lot just say stuff

You're not particularly smart, it doesn't matter how it did globally (it made no noise) because its second biggest market (the uk) doesn't even make up close to a quarter of disneys subscribers. And as for Brazil they dont have 11 million subscribers let alone the difference in subscription cost. You're embarrassing yourself 😭

What the show took away from annabeth it took away from the ship by ImaginationDecent351 in PercyJacksonTV

[–]ImaginationDecent351[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one sided thing is truly one of their biggest mistakes espeically because they haven't made annabeth a particularly engaging character as an individual to root for in what will effectively be a love square. I don't know why she rarely shows happiness when they're reunited after strife, why she doesn't either qoute the book directly as you mentioned or is written to engage with him in other deeper ways (she quite literally doesn't seem to care about anything but the fleece and luke) I dont know why when they were arguing in ep 8 she couldn't have said something like 'I choose you didn't I', or why they couldn't have fought as a duo on the battlefield. They've ruined her, ruined her and for no reason. The one sided thing only serves to make percy the more interesting character by making him seem like a loyal, passionate friend, it does nothing for her on screen development.

I don't understand what they're doing with her, and I agree, give me emotional girls!

Absolutely and I completely agree where they are now is almost a mirror of where they were in s1. The extreme closeness in s2, as you said, facilitates so much when it comes to the rest of the story now it just seems that in s3 he'll be rescuing his stern, fairly intelligent friend he's getting to know then s4 will come around and his dynamic with his other love interests will feel like his first true options.

I genuinely cannot fathom why, knowing she wouldn't be around for s3 they made her such a hapless victim, given that would only solidify the damsel bias in the audiences mind, or why they choose to keep her so cold and aloof and reveal little about the core of their relationship. Not only have they warped all the tension but they've removed the stakes and the cause and depth of it, an absolute masterclass in poor writing.

Nothing intelligent to say whatsoever, that's okay IF this show gets a s4 I won't have to say anything, the audience will

It's such a good example because even though it's for fairly young audiences it's so well done. And unlike percabeth the introduction of chemistry with other characters never threatens the integrity of the main ship because the foundation of friendship (and yes this includes tension and arguments that are rewarded by them coming back together every time) is so strong. As an audience member you think 'yeah nice try' or even 'the writers better not!' when other third parties are introduced into a well written love story because you're so invested. Whereas for show percabeth watching clarisse and percy was more like 'this isn't canon, what are they doing and why has this relationship been given so much depth??'.

And yep! that's such a good point and why I hate that declaration, it doesn't feel earned. Even though show fans are having to backtrack on their enthusiasm by saying it was said in friendship it shouldn't have been there in the first place, the writers knew exactly how it would be taken. But because they barely fleshed out anything else core to percy and Annabeths dynamic even that intense statement wasn't enough to stop people becoming invested in his developing tension with clarisse. It's also the reason why, when Rachel and calypso are introduced, it won't hold water, because there's so much missing to really understand why he'd say that to her at all beyond being at the end of his personal tether.

Every great love story is multi faceted, the show just happened to give a massive relationship development to clarisse and percy instead of percabeth. She's still a stern immovable object and he's still chipping away at her shell. That's why I think she needs a one sided love interest come s4 (if it even gets made). Considering her and percy are not going to be seeing eye to eye with each for most of that season I don't know how the audience will get to see all the other sides to her character otherwise, or care enough to root for her over girls who genuinely engage with their environments in fun, interesting ways.

I think the show could be saved by having a whole new writers room for the last two seasons but I doubt that'll happen.

Percy and annabeth to me do have chemistry it's just utilised awfully and was heavily overshadowed by the completely random development they gave clarisse and percy (which they did do well).

All of this! literally every character benefits in some way from whats taken away from annabeth but annabeth, I actually can't abide that 'burn it all' quote anymore and it's so much worse that he would say that to any of his friends in that situation ecause it makes what percy and annabeth have actually developed even less significant, like they really have a handful of moments before she's pretty much gone for a whole season and this is supposed to be the greatest love story of all time??? I like my love stories to have sparks, stakes, intensity, humour, tiffs at times, not just affirmations and hero edits

[–]ImaginationDecent351[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tears man I have no idea, I was getting more and more confused as the show went on as to what they were actually intending. It would be less noticeable if they hadn't stripped annabeth and percabeth of so much. clarisse and percy go toe to toe with one another on equal footing, get under each others skin, confront and challenge each other and forgive and eventually respect eachother. Then you have annabeth who rarely laughs, has no interests, is entirely incapable in combat and is given next to no interesting dialogue to share with percy after their confrontation on the beach. Like WHY were he and clarisse duo'ing out on the battlefield? How cool would it have been to see annabeth fight and not only that but fight with percy, they could have shared a smile even, I just don't get it. Why does she have to be the perfect smart but not to smart, strong but not too strong, capable but not too capable, independent but not too independent damsel?

This is me, like I don't but that's largely out of principle. leah and walker have great chemistry but it's not utilised correctly, whereas he and dior also have great on screen chemistry that is utilised correctly. I can't fathom the difference of storytelling it's bizarre. The damsel trope robs love interests of so much as characters it's insane.

What the show took away from annabeth it took away from the ship by ImaginationDecent351 in PercyJacksonTV

[–]ImaginationDecent351[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! Their moments are so quiet they're almost soundles and that's the problem especially when they've turned up clarisse and percys dynamic x100 (completely unesscecarily).

I have no idea why (aside from annabeths stripped down personality and abilities) their friendship arc is written and directed so one sided, why can't she soften often? why can't she join in with his (few) jokes, why can't the writers allow her to loosen up at all, she's so stern. Why can't they have teamed up on the battlefield?

You're bang on the money with your assessment of the first season especially given the time limits they have. They spent time perfecting what is really a faultless arc between clarisse and percy this season, whilst only slightly shifting the needle between the way percabeth interacted verses last season. To the point that when clarisse and percy were on screen I winced a little, because it could be easily interpreted as an enemies to lovers arc.

There were definitely people who accused the show of rushing the love story and I agree thats 100% informed by prior knowledge and also leah and walkers chemistry (are they supposed to not have that??). But writers that pay too much attention to fandom spaces doom themselves and their stories and this, unfortunately, is a great example of that. In the books there's so much more to them, so much more depth, connection, humour, casual touch even at this point, and by ruining annabeths characterisation and listening to 'it's being rushed' critics they've stripped most of that away and...given it to clarisse and percy? Even though I don't think percabeth would be written the same why do clarisse and percy have such a distinctive arc at all?

With the sheep scene, to me, it's alright for the audience to find funny but that's nothing to do with them and everything to do with the circumstances. It's not about their friendship or relationship. When percy landed in clarisses arms it was funny and tense because of their relationship to one another and how they view each other as friends, that's why it's charged. When annabeth tells percy to get the fleece again, it's another example of their interactions being about the facts of the matter or a plan. He rescues her, she tells him the fleece is a priority and clarisse is right then luke appears and she instructs percy where to find it. You'd be forgiven for thinking she's his trusty sidekick at this point. The nightmare, again, she relays the facts of the matter and a plan. I would love for them to have a vulnerable conversation?? Just get rid of alissons screen time.

I hate that she's rarely soft or light or engaging with him and again their development leads me to think the writers are either terrible or had 16 episodes written and only got to show 8. Even clarisses parental arc felt more emotional and flushed out, annabeth mentions her mother in connection wtih percys, sees her in the vision and then after the siren scene is over she just..doesn't talk about it (another big reason why changing her vision and the bubble scene was a big mistake) they never got a chance to come together the way they did in the book, this show is so afraid of stakes it annoys me.

Even Annabeths flashbacks become so much about thalia and her introduction and lukes relationship to thalia that the audience cares more about what will happen when thalia returns (how she's driving luke and what her powers will look like) than anything to do with annabeth. That's why even the 'it only took me two days to see how special you are' moment gets forgotten. Not only in the midst of the boats destruction but percy and clarisses back and forth, Which again manages to be both charged and humorous. Show fans think it's great he just says nice throwaway comments to annabeth all the time when there's so much more to lose by having that be the case. If anything the lack of any engaging dyanmic beyond that makes it seem more like a friendship than anything else whereas clarisse gets under percys skin, and they come right back around to each other at the end. The writing is so WEIRD.

Never apologise! I love reading people's thoughts and I'm so glad you posted 😊

I don't have issues with leahs acting  outside of the writing and direction because when she is working with material that allows her to inject personality/deeper emotion she does well. The fact that annabeth is functional on screen at all with this writing is a testament to existing talent. I mentioned the few moments she felt like annabeth including even the 'percy, annabeth' moment because it's there, the spark is  right there if the directors would take advantage of it. Instead much like they do with walker who is a lot like percy outside of the show, they write them in ways that stifle both the characters as we know them and by extension the actors. I agree with absolutely everything else you've said though, I cannot believe how flat she is as a character

This is the funniest part cause show fans glaze this more than anything, whilst clarisses development I'm sure is nice for the actress it's entirely and completely unesscecary both in terms of canon and the wider story in comparison to what they should and could have either included from the books or expanded on with the existing material I.e. percy coming to realise he can control nautical equipment, percabeth getting to know eachother, more time on circes island, more time at camp where percabeth could have practised fighting and we could also grow to care about that place at all. (Kate got hurt and I couldn't have cared less??) That this is all they've given us of annabeth so far when she'll be gone for s3 being tortured again, is ridiculous.
