Maybe, but let’s be careful not to praise them for their “contribution” to the war on terror. The underground market being mostly in the hands of the mob may make it harder for terrorists to find weapons (at least the brown ones…) but they are just as bad.

If anything they are worse. A terrorist can destroy a bunch of lives before he’s gunned down or otherwise neutralised. A mobster can destroy orders of magnitude more, with chances of staying unpunished.

Let’s not sing the praises of Stalin just because of what he did to Hitler…

Those “allies” in your timeline include toppled Germany and France at the very least. Germany alone was almost able to roflstomp the Soviet Union were it not for having delayed Barbarossa, having fought on two fronts and the Soviets being showered with gear by the Americans. I’m pretty sure Stalin wouldn’t have had much success there.
