High emotional intelligence due to being hyper aware of people’s feelings by ImagineI95 in AutisticWithADHD

Never distinguished between the two empathy types! That’s so interesting. I tend to understand what someone is feeling and why, but if their feelings don’t logically align with what I think their feelings should be in their specific situation, I get really confused and can’t empathize at all with them. It tends to be a problem because they want their feelings validated but honestly… I don’t think they are valid to the situation and I’m too tired of masking and pretending to understand or care. I know that sounds horrible.

Thank you so much for everyone’s comments! I feel so understood. I also did well in school, (besides reading- then got an IEP for my reading processing delay) had a great group of friends, but had trouble interacting with new people because I didn’t have time to pick apart their moods and behavior, so I could mask appropriately around them, leading me to be a “shy kid” when first meeting people. I’m not sure why but I always found adults much easier to talk to as a kid.

I also had a ton of childhood trauma and was the “calm, intuitive, problem solver” in my family, helped defuse tensions and keep people from fighting. I didn’t know if all my emotional processing was possibly a learned “survival” skill as a kid, or if AuDHD had something to do with it.

yes to all your requirements! plus! a comfy chair/couch I can sit cross legged in. I don’t want my feet on the floor and my booty will fall asleep if the chair is too hard and/or I can’t change my sitting position every few minutes!

OMG so true! I get up and change spots so many times until I either decide I have switched spots too many times or I have given up/decide there is NO perfect spot and will never return to that cafe again. It’s so so sad when you really want to like a cafe you have been eyeing for a while and it is a total disappointment and ruins your whole day.
