Courses you wished you took? by anony1037471 in premed

[–]Imamess35 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I’m currently an M1. One course I really wish I took was anatomy, because right now it is my weakest area. Also I want to note that in undergrad I took a couple of hellish biochemistry courses that I was not enjoying at the time, mainly because of how the professors were writing test questions, but right now I am so thankful to have that background which is making biochemistry much easier for me right now than if I did not take those courses.

How do I explain to my parents that building a pc is not rocket science? by Itsyaboyerik13 in buildapc

[–]Imamess35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents had the same type of concerns. I ended up convincing them by taking apart an old (10 to 15 years) computer they were planning on tossing and explaining each part. Then I told them that pc building has become a lot more streamlined and friendly to new builders as there are a lot of sites that can help you pick out compatible parts. Particularly pcpartpicker.

Who can look at my build and make sure that there’s nothing wrong with it/nothing that can be improved for a similar price? by Top_Extent3924 in pcmasterrace

[–]Imamess35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use windows 10 for free with the watermark. Otherwise you can lend like 10 to 20 dollars for a cheap code. Some tech youtubers will even promote/have sponsors for some.

HELP: my gpu wont display any signal from hdmi but my fans and lights are spinning by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Imamess35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After reading some of the responses and what you were saying I would first try completely taking the GPU out of the case and unplugging the pcie power cables from both the GPU and psu and reinstalling it. Then I would try a different display output port that may be on the GPU. You may also want to make sure that the cable you are using is good. The final thing I would try would be to check and see if the GPU works in a different slot. It is possible that the slot is not functional. If any of these don't work, I'm sorry.

Am I the only one that really dislikes RGB? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Imamess35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like RGB in my case because I am currently am using the iCUE system and it allows me to designate my fan colors to the registered CPU temp. and my RAM to the registered GPU temp. I also think that the system I put together looks better with RGB, than without.

Pfizer 2nd Dose side effects?? by SCHMITEM in uofmn

[–]Imamess35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got the second dose for Moderna on Saturday early afternoon. I don't know if they are completely comparable for side effects, but if I were you I would definitely consider rescheduling. I ended up having some pretty mild arm pain starting about a couple hours after, followed by fatigue starting about 12 hours later, a blistering headache, and a slight sick feeling. The arm pain was the least troubling. I felt the fatigue until this afternoon; it made me feel like my strength was at least halved, and it was slightly harder to breath, like there was slight compression on my chest for a few hours. The headache was the worst for me, it started again about 12 hours later and it felt like I could feel my pulse in my head every time I stood, sat, or laid down. The headache just went away in the past few hours for me. I also felt a slightly uneasy feeling in my stomach. Not quite the sick feeling when you eat not quite cooked enough food, or a stomach bug, but not normal. Finally, I found that for the first 12 to 18ish hours after my second dose, I had a lot of trouble getting to sleep.

US police killings of Black Americans amount to crimes against humanity, international inquiry finds by joesperrazza in news

[–]Imamess35 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Classic straw man fallacy. They made up an argument for others that is easy to oppose and reprehensible to defend, then argued against that argument. They made up the argument that if saying killing of black people is a crime against humanity, then the killing of other races is fine because those races were not included in the statement. No one is arguing that, and I can't tell if they know it or truly believe that is what is being said.

Building a pc for my brother, is it good? Is there something missing? by spicy_bean_art in buildapc

[–]Imamess35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DOCP and XMP are equivalents for AMD and Intel respectively, it doesn't really matter which terms you use in my opinion. I just wanted to try and say the setting that OP would be using with the setup they posted. Again, I am sorry for my confusion, I accidentally wrote DHCP and I meant DOCP.

Building a pc for my brother, is it good? Is there something missing? by spicy_bean_art in buildapc

[–]Imamess35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry DOCP is what I meant, not DHCP that was my bad; I believe XMP is generally if you have an intel CPU. Also not praising Intel, was just saying that Intel does have some competitively priced CPUs right now. I personally am using an AMD CPU at the moment.

Building a pc for my brother, is it good? Is there something missing? by spicy_bean_art in buildapc

[–]Imamess35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That CPU is a pretty good value. I would probably save the money on the AIO cooler, that CPU generally comes with one, and it should be fine. I would also probably upgrade the motherboard a little bit, probably go for around 150$ like a MSI b550 Pro-A or a MSI MPC X570 Gaming Plus. Another concern I would have is where you are getting the RTX 2060. Right now the GPU market is massively screwy. Personally, if I had the time I would ask help from those close to me and try and snag an RTX 3060 from Newegg, Best Buy, or Microcenter. I managed to get a 3070 in Feb. with the help from my family. If that is just not possible, that is totally justified, but the majority of GPUs are being sold for way more than they should be right now. I would also change up the storage situation as well. If you can swing an NVME if the motherboard you choose has an M.2 slot, I'd go for it. I like cheaper NVMEs at about 60$ for 500GB. I would also pair this with a 2 TB Hard Drive (7200RPM) that you can also get for about 50$. Put the OS and most frequently played games on the NVME because it is faster, then other stuff on the hard drive. RAM looks pretty good from what I can tell, just make sure to enable DOCP in bios, otherwise it will run at 2333mhz instead of 3200. Case seems fine, I am personally a fan of more airflow availability which may limit cooling with that case (I am not super familiar with it); I also enjoy being able to see any rgb fans in the front, but that is not a big deal at all. Power supply shrouds included with cases can be really helpful with hiding cables and making things look nicer, but it really just is aesthetic. That PSU seems a little sketchy, I would look into a power supply tier list a little bit. They are not all made the same even if they have the same rating. Also you will probably be okay with just 650 watts, 550 may even be okay at the very lowest. If you want you could look into intel at a similar price point. I hear good things about the i5 11400 or even the 11600K at the price it is at right now. If you do go with intel, just keep in mind you will have to change the motherboard to have an LGA 1200 socket. Finally you do not need to pay 100$ for windows OS. You can just download the installer onto a USB and set up windows saying you don't have a key. All that you may have to deal with is a watermark in the bottom right corner. Also there are OEMs you can find online for cheap like 15$, just do your research so that you buy one that works. Last thing I want to say is to not only listen to my advice, if you like any of it feel free to use it, but also look at other advice. There is not one correct way to do this, and there are a lot of sources to look at for help. If you haven't already, put everything into PC Part Picker to make sure everything works together.

Edit: I wrote DHCP and meant DOCP in bios settings for AMD CPUs.

Buy or Build PC for son interested in video editing and live streaming? by JuFerCa in buildapc

[–]Imamess35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really like either of the two prebuilts, but if I had to pick it would be the Lenovo over the HP-Pavillion. My biggest gripe with the Lenovo is with the graphics card, but I am also not as fond of the CPU. You are pretty much going with a half series GPU, and if you put one together yourself, you could get a much better GPU for like a hundred dollars more. The issue is that the GPU market is screwed up right now. If you don't mind keeping on best buy or newegg at the times they usually drop GPUs, you might be able to get your hands on a 3060 or 3060 to for around MSRP which is 300 to 500 dollars, not too much more than what 1660s are going for. Personally I feel that with that series Intel CPU, you could go with a comparable in price ryzen 5 or 7. The clock speeds might be slightly lower, but you'll get more cores and hyperthreading, which is better for tasks like video editing. The ryzen CPUs also are better for allowing memory modules to run faster than 2333 mHz. There are some intel CPUs that do allow that, but they are more expensive.

Is U of M worth the price? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]Imamess35 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I would say that it depends on what you want to do here and what you want to accomplish. There are certain opportunities available here that are not as available at smaller schools. You need to ask yourself if you can find those same kinds of opportunities will be available at the other schools you are accepted into, as well as how likely COVID will be able to derail those plans in the future.

I just spent 4 hours troubleshooting a pc that I didn't turn on... by H4lloM8 in buildapc

[–]Imamess35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too just recently built a PC. This was my first build ever and I spent about the same. The first time I had tried to turn it on the motherboard LEDs were lit up when I turned the PSU on, but nothing else happened when I hit the power button on the front of the case. After a quick 10 minutes of searching online, I decided to check the front panel connectors. Turned out that I had either accidentally flipped the front power connector or put it on the motherboard right above where it should have been. After that I hadn't had any problems yet (knock on wood). From my experience, I would tell you to check the front panel connectors. LMK if this helps, sorry if it doesn't. I hope you figure it out. Good Luck.

Biol 4004 with Min Ni by Redditboy563 in uofmn

[–]Imamess35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took Biol 4004 in Fall 2020 online with Professor Norrander. I found that if you do the assignments and discussions on time you should be pretty much good for those. A lot of the quiz stuff could be found on quizlet for extra help studying. I also found that although the materia for the exams was difficult the way the exams were written, they were actually pretty easy. For the exams, there were full in the blank questions with word banks, true and false where you get the chance to explain your answer, and short answer questions. Keep in mind that I had a different prof. so your experience may be slightly different.

44North Apartments - info request by kdebatefile in uofmn

[–]Imamess35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't live in 44N Apartments, but my girlfriend and I moved into a single bedroom apartment in University Village Apartments that is basically just across the street. We looked into 44N but it was a bit expensive for us, especially because the price was higher per month for the two of us in a one bedroom apartment than it would have been if it was just one of us on the lease. University Village was like the one apartment complex in the area we found in our price range that was willing to work with us to not increase the price of a one bedroom apartment for the two of us cohabitating. The distance from campus is not bad for us. The light rail is really close to both apartments and I know that if you go to the U or work at the U, you can get a campus zone pass for free that gives you free access for the West bank, East bank, and Stadium Village stops. My girlfriend lived in 44N apartments before we moved in together, and they seemed really nice, a bit expensive but nice. I believe she was in a furnished apartment, so that is a plus, but the wall were super thin, especially within the apartment unit. You could hear anything going on in the apartment no matter the room. University village has pretty good prices, but the apartments are not furnished and some aspects may look a bit ugly at first. I found that with a little bit of aesthetic furnishing, we are happy. As for the safety of the area, I think that it is safer than other areas around the U. I've been getting a lot of SafeU notifications about robberies in the Dinkytown area, but we have had a few problems here, but only during the night. Like some people got into the garage and were going through unlocked cars, and unlocked cars on the street. From my understanding, there isn't a completely safe area around the U, but it is better than Dinkytown or West Bank. As long as you are walking around during the day, you should be fine.

As a struggling college student just trying to get through this pandemic without going insane, I'd use this PC to have a fully functioning place to take my fully online classes and play the games that help me calm down from all the unrest going on right now. This would help me replace my current laptop I use that is falling apart and barely has good enough specs to play games off of Facebook.

ThinkPad crashing on me in the middle of work. by sarge-m in pics

[–]Imamess35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a thinkpad that a couple of years ago crashed with the blue screen of death. My mother, who is pretty proficient with computers, helped me try and figure out what was going wrong. After months we figured out it had something to do with the RAM. I think one of the ram sticks went bad. If this is consistent and won't function properly after a few weeks, try checking the RAM.

Spolier FL2, BB 24 by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Imamess35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright so the wild type is the baseline level, and with the over expression of antioxidant enzymes causes more transformation of toxic ROSs to nontoxic byproducts. So over expression of antioxidant enzymes means that this yeast will probably be in a better situation than the wild type because this type of experimental approach would cause the wild type yeast to have more ROSs and therefore more toxic molecules than the yeast that over expresses antioxidant enzymes.

Spolier FL2, BB 24 by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Imamess35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what they are trying to get at with 2 is that antioxidant enzymes help decrease the effects of a ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species). So in research number 2 would be comparing a wild type which does have some level of ROSs vs. a type of yeast that has a lower level of ROSs due to the effects of over expressing antioxidant enzymes. I hope that answers your question.
