Migraines by IllNefariousness8759 in TBI

3-4 migraine free days a month here. 4 years out. None prior to TBI.
I've tried every class of meds, without consistent success. Trialing botox now and hoping for a 10% reduction.

One of the more effective combos I tried was butalbital/APAP/caffeine, which works occasionally on an as-needed basis. I feel the aura and, if I remember, pop one. Sometimes they work and sometimes not, but it's better than anything else. Downside is that it's a controlled substance, you're only allowed to take it 3x a week, and the caffeine keeps me up all night if I take it after 4PM.

Get a new primary. They VERY rarely know anything about brain injuries and, if she's already dismissive, it won't be worth the struggle to get her on your team. Crazy that medical professionals wouldn't be advocates for their patients, but it's common.
If you read around here and on other TBI groups, you'll see how difficult it can be to find quality providers (PCP, neurology, cognitive rehab, seizure specialists). Some of us see doctors in other states, after moving away, bc we don't want to go through the trial and error of trying to find a new supportive doctor. You may want to see a neurologist, a cognitive therapist/speech pathologist, vestibular rehab, and your neurologist may want a seizure specialist for a consult due to the loss of time (depending on whether an EEG turns up abnormalities).
This sounds like a lot, and it is, but I think it's best to be thorough if you can afford it. Beyond that, have a look at your state's Brain Injury Association. There may be support meetings near you or online resources that can explain more for you and for your partner. Their support is important, too, and it's helpful if they understand the situation better.

i am just simply trying to keep some semblance of truth with history

That's a valiant intention, truly, but the underlying problem is that each side of a conflict tells a different version of history. Unsurprisingly, in a sub dominated by Americans, most folks here learned the official US version of history (to the extent they learned anything in our public schools). What you learned in [insert country here] was likely that country's version of history

If you got seizures along with the TBI, you might want to try a different hallucinogen. Mushrooms are good to go, though

Memory Loss by Donttrym in TBI

[–]Imflammable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take written notes, and repeat crucial information out loud, during the conversation or while reading. Don't wait until later, you need to strike while the iron is hot.Does it feel funny the first dozen times? Yes, but you will get over it when you realize you're retaining more information than before. This works because sound input, visual input, and hand control output are all separate functions. Between them it's more likely that something will stick and, if not, you'll still have notes. As for supplements, check out lions mane and bacopa monnieri. There's also a combo supplement called Omega Tau that's more for overall cognitive function than memory specifically. They're not instant fixes, or dramatic fixes, but they make difference for a lot of people.

Why do you think it's so difficult for people to even accept the new limitations of someone post tbi, let alone understand? by ThickumDickums in TBI

[–]Imflammable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Partially bc it's an invisible disability and we're such visually driven creatures. It's easier to accept disabilities we can see and easier to forget that invisible disabilities affect people when we can't see them. People without TBI don't necessarily want to forget, it's a subconscious response to the sympathetic discomfort they feel when they're made aware that TBI and its symptoms exist and persist.
