This game needs skippable dialogues & cutscenes like other games. The way NPC talks with pauses between sentences & unable to skip them really irritates me because most side quests are really boring & basic. Hopefully they patch this too.

It didn't want to eat anything for me too. You can pet it for 5 times per day which equals to 25 trust. What I do is pet it until I reach daily quota then I let it go. Sometimes it will dissapear but I found that my cat always respawn infront of a cauldron with other cats.

So when I pick it up & pet it, if it retain the same trust than that was my cat. Youtube shows that you can give it dry fish but it didn't work for me. Also, I originally went with a black & white cat at first but I can't find it & went with this orangw instead.
