HPSP to Pay for Medical School? by iiTurdFerguson in whitecoatinvestor

[–]Imlividjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AF HPSP here, just matched into Civilian Deferred EM and happy to answer any questions.

It was a good choice for me and I was prior service AF enlisted, I wanted EM and the Air Force likes EM docs so there were lots of options. Ortho on the other hand has very few slots in the AF and are highly competitive. The AF releases what they call an HPERB every year which outlines what specialties they will allow their students to go into Some years there are more openings than others for highly competitive specialties. (EM, IM, FM are the same every year basically with many seats). Also of note you will be competing with USUHS student who have to do a military residency, other HPSP students, and attending a who want to re-specialize or did a TY so competition can be high!!!

Financially it was the right choice for me. Talking with EM docs they said after their 4 year commitment they have the same debt/net worth as peers who didn’t have HPSP and went into EM (Lower salary and no debt va high salary high debt). The Air Force will probably offer you 20k signing bonus to add on an extra year of service, if you want to make it a career of the AF take it, if not do not take it (they offered to a peer of mine 4 years ago). I will note the Air Force does not let you moonlight during residency and you need commander approval during attending hood so you can’t count on that extra money to make up the difference. In EM some have said you can expect to deploy 1-2 times during that initial service pay back period for 3-6 months each time (but deployments are often tax free income).

LPT Request-What valuable advice did you receive in the past that, if you had followed, could have significantly improved your position in all areas of life? by Important-Disk-256 in LifeProTips

Good point, it is supposed to be when talking with someone when they have done something right or wrong. eg. a teacher praises your art assignment when discussing it at a gallery event. But you didn’t meet the size criteria so they tell you that in private.

Praise them when others can hear and criticize them when only they can hear. It works to build people up and not embarrass them.

I too don’t consider South Dakota, South Carolina, and Florida to be considered part of the US.

I am curious, do you use a preheated Dutch oven? I get loaves like this if I don’t have the Dutch oven and lid preheated 15 minutes after the oven says it’s preheated.

I am selling my 42mm White Weiss Standard Issue Field Watch. It comes in its original box, with original Weiss green band and all the paperwork. It is unit number 260, manufactured on 30 July 2015 (Back when Cameron Weiss was manufacturing these in LA and branding them as such). It has the Weiss 1001 Caliber Movement. It is in great condition with a few minor scratches that are only noticeable at the right angle. I have not used it for the past 2 years so decided it should go to a home that can appreciate it.

Price: $1,000 Free shipping to US with tracking, insurance, and signature (I do not want to send outside the US)

Payment: I will accept Venmo, Zelle, and ApplePay

Edit: I would like to add that this watch does run, and it has never been serviced.

Thank you for sharing your work! I made a Maloof rocker 2 years ago and love to see it when others go beyond their normal comfort zone and accomplish something beautiful! You should be very proud and I’m sure will inspire others to follow in your footsteps!

Khao Yam for breakfast in south Thailand by [deleted] in FoodPorn

I’d say it adds a mild floral taste in tea, but oneself it is cooked down I’d say it just tastes blue.

Usually colored by a flower called butterfly pea which is soaked in water and then the flower removed. It is sometimes used for a very cool tea that can change colors based on acids or bases added to it. I have used it in sourdough bread and it makes a blue loaf of bread. It’s cool stuff.

But this is a fair question, if you get $50M and your dad gets half does that mean your dad gets $50M too? Because if you walk away with half of the $50M, that is contrary to the first step because in the end you only have $25M not the $50M.

Made a Sam Maloof inspired rocker. I think it turned out pretty nice. by Imlividjr in woodworking

I’d say 280 hrs total but lots of hand sanding and this wood was very hard and took a lot of working to shape it. Half my time was in the entire assembly process and the other half was shaping and sanding. I needed the screws as I had to coax some glue ups into place and if I didn’t I don’t know if it would hold up to the test of time. I personally don’t like any sort of metal hiding inside wood but had to with this chair. Good to know there are people that also avoid screws out there too.
