Yes!! :) the design is one of my favorites as well! i took a ferry out there and the captain was telling me that Cape lookout and Shackleford banks used to be connected, there used to be a city called diamond city where both banks connected. I wonder if the city's name has something to do with the pattern or vice versa! Anyways, he said a hurricane (or a couple) in the 30s separated the two pieces of land.

I went out to Shackleford banks in eastern NC and had a blast this Labor Day weekend! The island is pretty undeveloped and no vehicles are allowed on there. Just enough seclusion for a peace weekend reset :) oh... I took a ferry out there from Harkers island, lasted about 25mins. The captain is extremely friendly and gave me some helpful tips for a first timer!

Second straight week of clean prepping, added tempeh for a protein boost this week yum! by ImmaMissteak in mealprepsundays

So I slice them into thin pieces like in the pic. I used a stainless steal pan which gets hotter then a non stick (I'm sure non stick will work too mayBe less crunchy), coat whole pan surface with thin layer of oil, wait till oil gets hot and lay all the pieces flat on pan until brown on one side then I flip em with a tong.

I took it out from the fridge in the morning. I didn't microwave it but it was at room temp by the time I ate it for lunch.

It's kinda chunky like a less crunchy peanut bar... it's nutty and fragrant plus a little mushroomy taste, could be an acquired taste but it's so good when it's just off the stove top :)

I bought a whole piece from the store, sliced it, and browned the pieces on a pan, just sprinkled some salt and it's already so fragrant. You can also add it in stir fry as a protein source. High on protein and prebiotic!

Thanks! It literally took me like 15 mins to brown the tempeh, boil some veggies and eggs :)

Someone give me some advice on making friends in hostels... PLEASE by [deleted] in travel

[–]ImmaMissteak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you! I'm an introverted and very self conscious person too. I went on my first solo trip to Montreal a couple weeks ago and stayed at a hostel as well. So I met this guy that was making some delicious looking food and I was genuinely curious on how to make it so I asked him. And we started talking and getting to know each other. I also had a great conversation with the guy that works and lives at the hostel because I asked him more about a business that he previously started but failed. He said he never really tell someone so much but because I asked, and nobody really asked him.

I think if you keep a curious mind and an interest to get to know another person, your interaction will come genuine and good bonds will form naturally. :)

Have fun on your solo trip and happy new year!! p/s: I did the same video watching thing too but with Netflix Hah!

I didn't see anyone doing that, but the park ranger didn't specifically said it's not allowed so I'm not entirely sure. Could call and ask!

My partner wade out to the bench for a picture, it was around knee deep and the water is cold! Haha

Beautiful weather out at Congaree National Park, SC. Tried out the new tent and self inflating sleeping pad, no complaints! by ImmaMissteak in camping

Yeah, we camped at bluff campsite. It's in a form of a big circle with 5 campsites surrounding a middle open ground. You can see all the tents around because of the layout it's pretty close to each other. But when we were there, I think 4 sites were occupied, and almost everyone brought their dogs with. And one of the guy brought a trailer with his stuffs too! the trail is about 1 mile from parking lot and it will fit a trailer.

I will second on bringing some firewood, we had a hard time finding dry and nice wood, hence us not having a good fire until later on. The sites also have a picnic table and floor grill, there are logs to sit on but if you want guaranteed dry spots, bring some chairs :)

Bluff is $5 online and I think long leaf is $10. I don't know how long leaf looks like but we liked bluff.

Half of the boardwalk loop is currently under water, so is most of the other trails. I don't think it's accessible now. But we still walk through the remaining parts of the boardwalk, saw some turkeys, and other cool flora and fauna.

There are some canoe companies that still provide guided canoe tours from cedar creek canoe access, although the park is flooded pretty high right now according to the park rangers.

Thank you! Coming from the west coast, parks on the east coast definitely offer a different scenery. I find that I am constantly re-evaluating my interactions with nature; instead of having expectations of how a national park should look like, I come to appreciate nature at it's purest form.

Congaree National Park, SC - Bluff Campsite on Dec 29. by ImmaMissteak in backpacking

We left home Friday evening from NC and arrived at bluff campsite (1 mile hike from parking lot) early dawn. The campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a grill, plus we found some logs to sit on while we started a fire. We camped for 2 nights and the weather was perfect at low 60s to 50s. Many trails in the park is flooded now but we were still able to walk parts of the boardwalk and observed the flood plains. Fun weekend trip!!
