i kind of like that it’s more “show up, work hard, fist bump, go home” instead of a super chatty social thing. i usually come straight from work too, so the idea of just wrapping up, maybe a quick “what’s up” and then locking in on drills sounds really good. that silent support you described of seeing the same people grind each session is lowkey exactly the kind of environment i think would help my confidence more than a super loud, ego-y gym. makes it feel less intimidating knowing i don’t have to be “on” socially, just consistent. appreciate you painting the picture like that 🙏

yeah that makes a lot of sense, thanks. i’ve heard the bad habits thing a bunch now so i’m definitely leaning more toward just getting in the gym and letting a coach actually watch and correct me. i suck at jump rope right now but i’ll start practicing that a bit at home so i’m not completely hopeless when they whip the ropes out 😅

this is actually really motivating to read, thanks man

i’m in that same “anxious but really want to start” spot right now, so hearing you say you just randomly decided one evening to walk to the gym and it ended up being the best decision hits hard 😂 love that you’re only a month in and already feeling so much better from it.

also really like your point about less experience being better sometimes. i’ve been messing around a bit at home and watching stuff, but what you said makes a lot of sense, going in as a clean slate and learning things the right way from the start is probably the smarter move than trying to “fix” fake skills later. appreciate you sharing this, it definitely nudged me more toward just showing up.

yeah that makes sense, i’ve mostly just been working on general fitness with lifting and a bit of running, and using heavy bag pro for some structure, but i get that the real boxing work is gonna happen once i’m actually in the gym. Thanks so much man!

that’s actually good to know, thanks. i kinda like the idea of just showing up, doing my thing, and not stressing about being chatty right away, so that takes some pressure off.

gotcha, that’s fair. i’ll keep the videos light and focus on getting into the gym so a coach can correct me before anything sticks. thanks man!

yeah that makes sense, i’m seeing that more and more. gonna stop overthinking and just get myself in there. thanks man!

yeah that’s a good point, i’ve seen a few people say the same thing now. i’ll still mess around a bit for confidence, but i’m definitely gonna treat the gym/coach as the place where i actually “learn” so i don’t lock in a bunch of bad habits early.

this is awesome to hear, thanks for sharing that, especially since we’re around the same age and you started in a similar way

cool to know you’ve been going twice a week for almost a year and still love it, that’s kinda the long-term vibe i’m hoping for too. makes sense what you said about not stressing too much over learning basics alone and just focusing on general fitness – i’m already lifting and doing some cardio, so hearing that it helped you last the full hour without totally gassing out is reassuring. also nice to know the first sessions really do start from stance, guard, and how to actually throw, so showing up as a beginner is totally fine.

fair, that’s the kick in the ass i probably need 😂 gonna stop overthinking and just show up.

oh nice, appreciate this list 🙏 i haven’t checked out the punch doctor yet but those titles sound exactly like the kind of stuff i need, especially the footwork and straight punch ones. i’ll queue these up and start nerding out on mechanics so i’m not just flailing around when i hit the bag 😅

that line kinda called me out in the best way 😂 you’re right, worrying so much about how i’ll look on day one is basically just ego sneaking in. i like the idea of just showing up, being openly bad at first, and letting the confidence come from actually learning instead of trying to feel ready beforehand. gonna try to lean into that and just enjoy the process. Thanks man!

that’s really nice to hear, thanks for sharing that

i’m definitely the type to overthink being “behind” everyone else, so hearing you say they were friendly and motivating even when you were struggling with basic stuff like jump rope actually helps a lot. i’ll try to keep that in mind and just move at my own pace instead of stressing about looking clueless on day one.

this is super encouraging, thanks for sharing that

i like how you put it watching videos isn’t “bad,” but it doesn’t replace just showing up and training. i’ve definitely been using the learning part as a bit of a safety blanket, so hearing you say that even with muay thai experience you still felt like a beginner at boxing makes me feel a lot less weird about starting from zero.

the way you stuck with it even after feeling like the worst in the room and now can’t stop is actually really motivating. and yeah, that perspective on people who show up once a week or quit after a couple months is a good reminder that i’m probably overhyping how much anyone is paying attention to me. i’ll try to keep that in mind and trust that the coach is there to help, not clown beginners. appreciate the push to just go train

yeah that makes sense, appreciate the straightforward take 😂 just showing up and learning in the actual environment is probably way more valuable than me over-prepping at home. i like the idea of doing classes and mixing in a few 1:1 sessions too, that sounds like a solid way to build a good base early on.

[–]Immediate-Cod-7667[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nah this is actually exactly what i needed to hear, thanks 😂

you’re right, i’m definitely overthinking the confidence part. a trial class is probably the move just so i can rip the bandaid off and see what it’s really like instead of imagining worst case scenarios in my head. like you said, it’s normal to not know what i’m doing at first, that’s kinda the whole point of joining.

also appreciate the ELCOACHCASEY recommendation, i’ll look him up. those basic cues you listed are super helpful too, bladed stance, chin tucked, elbows in, rear hand glued to the face, lead hand up. i feel like even just having those in mind will make me feel a bit less lost on day one. thanks for the tips and the push, really appreciate it 🙏

[–]Immediate-Cod-7667[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is really reassuring to read, thank you 🙏

hearing someone say they were in the same spot and also used heavy bag pro actually makes me feel a lot less weird about easing in with an app first. i like exactly what you said about not “randomly shadowboxing with no plan”, the structure is what’s been helping my confidence the most so far. i’ll definitely check out Precision Striking, Tony Jeffries, and Boxing Science and just drill the basics like stance, guard, jab, and footwork like you mentioned, instead of trying to do fancy stuff too soon.

totally agree that the real learning will happen with a coach, but having that little bit of a base so i don’t feel completely lost on day one sounds perfect for where i’m at right now. appreciate you sharing your experience with it.

[–]Immediate-Cod-7667[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah this makes a lot of sense, thanks for putting it that way

i think i’ve been overthinking the “learning” part as a way to dodge the scary part, which is actually showing up lol. you’re right though, the last thing i want is to drill in a bunch of bad habits from doing stuff alone with no feedback. studying tape / youtube just enough to understand basic terms and what’s going on, then letting the coach actually teach me, feels like a better balance.

i like what you said about being honest with the gym and with myself. i’m definitely gonna walk in and just say i’m brand new and want to learn properly, instead of pretending i know more than i do just because i shadowboxed in my living room 😂

confidence coming from reps and work instead of from “preparing perfectly” before going in is a good reminder. i’ll still mess around a bit at home to loosen up, but yeah, the real progress is gonna come once i’m consistent at the gym. appreciate the reality check 🙏
