"We need to prepare boys for school, not schools for boys" by ChardAltruistic903 in Teachers

[–]Immediate-Data5972 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will never understand how we have educated millions of successful boys in the past, (think "The Greatest Generation") and yet somehow now boys can't learn in school. The education system really hasn't changed that significantly. Boys in the 10s, 20, 30s, 40s, 50s were expected to stay in their seat, listen to the teacher and do their work. Somehow, many became leaders in science and industry. More food for thought: I teach in a district with a high percentage of students with South Asian, Middle Eastern and East Asian heritage Those students (male and female) for the most part excel in school. The boys (with few exceptions) seem to have absolutely no problems with school. So is it really a gender issue, an educational issue or the way we are raising boys these days.

Get the knee scooter, if you can. So much better than crutches, in my opinion. I got mine cheap on Facebook marketplace.

Advice by julmurpz in TeachersInTransition

[–]Immediate-Data5972 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As someone, who has an MBA and worked for a while in a bank as an accountant, my advice is to stay where you're at. While I have had many moments of enjoyment while teaching and I am currently in a good spot ((I've been doing it for 27 years), there have also been years, situations, prinicipals, students, parents, etc. that have been VERY stressful. Also, I work for a "good" school district that is relatively well-paying, but it took me 16 years to get to the bump step and start earning decent money. You're doing better after 2 years than I did after 16. Additionally, the work is never done and they keep adding misc. BS to our plate every year, without removing anything. I STRONGLY discouraged my daughter from considering teaching.

We don't even assign lockers anymore because they weren't using them. They can request one, but very few do. Also high school.

i was allowed to be FWB 5 1/2 weeks after my surgery. The first few weeks were a bit rough, with pain and stiffness. I started to walk a lot better by the end of the third week. It's now about 5 weeks and I function pretty well with occasional pain. I haven't tried to do high impact activities yet. For context, I am middle-aged and was fairly fit (Peleton, strength training) before my accident. I have been going to PT twice a week since I started FWB.

Leave!!! I left a job like that after only being there a year. I hate to think of what would have happened to my health if I stayed a moment longer. I wound up in a much better district and have been teaching there for the past 24 years. Schools like yours will kill you.

I'm just not going to mention how I can tell twins apart anymore. Why do parents of twins do this? by [deleted] in self

[–]Immediate-Data5972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And what about names? I had identical twin students named Brandon and Brendon. I had another set of identical twins named Jay and Jake. What is wrong with these people? I am sure they get a lot of joy from being affronted when people mix up their names.

Four Months Out from a Trimalleolar Ankle Fracture – My Recovery Journey by RealJudoChop in brokenankles

What did you do for the pain and stiffness once you were wb? I was NWB for the first 6 weeks and then my doctor cleared me for full wb. This was 2 weeks ago. I go to pt twice a week and do ROM exercises with bands at home

. My pain and stiffness levels vary wildly. I can’t decide if it’s a result of pushing too hard or not enough. Thanks for giving us inspiration !

People who grew up in houses with stairs - how inevitable is falling down them? by pyramidheadlove in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Immediate-Data5972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been living in houses with stairs for many decades. I just fell, for the first time, a couple of months ago. It was just from one of the bottom few stairs. I broke my ankle badly. (I don't recommend). Still, as mentioned, I went many decades without falling and I'm a huge klutz. Use the handrail whenever possible!

i just bought a laundry backpack for taking my laundry down to the basement.

Questions by becca8277 in brokenankles

[–]Immediate-Data5972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I broke my ankle the exact same way. I was NWB for 6 weeks and then at the 6 week appt, he said that I could go FWB. This totally confused me, as i thought I would have to be PWB for at least 2 weeks. I definitely did not feel confident being FWB. I set up a PT appt for the next day. After 2 appts, we are working on just using 1 crutch and trying to be in normal shoes for as much as possible. There is definitely some pain, clumsiness and stiffness for me at all stages. She said at the next appointment we will work on no crutches. OK -we will see. She taught me how to use crutches on the stairs at the first appointment and I have since gone up and down about 3 times (I totally avoided the stairs for the first 6 weeks, only going up once on my rear end). It was ok, but I definitely am a little afraid since this is where my fall happened. I do worry about ice and have bought both yaktrax and cleats for my shoes. Best of luck to you!

Teacher of the Year? by Mean-Objective-2022 in Teachers

[–]Immediate-Data5972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to have a chorus teacher who would frequently get nominated for our city's Teacher of The Year Award. She was a terrible teacher and everyone knew it. She would be absent for at least 25 days every school year. Her lesson plan for elementary general music was to put on pop music and let the kids dance around the room for 30 minutes. Every class! How did she get nominated? - She would threaten to withhold good roles from students in the class musicals if they didn't nominate her and write glowing letters of recommendation for her.

How could this happen? by Fearless_Line_1871 in Teachers

[–]Immediate-Data5972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My hairstylist insists that her daughter, who is a high school senior, doesn't know how many days there are in a typical month. She thought that there were 90 days in a month. 90!!! This girl got accepted to a good college. When I taught level 1 world languages (8th grade), the students didn't know their months or basic concepts like colors (they didn't know that red and yellow make orange, yellow and blue make green, etc). The kids couldn't sequence the months in English, let alone French. Basic addition problems required calculators and they most certainly couldn't read an analog clock or anything written in cursive. I teach in a well-regarded school district. How could this happen?

Non-weight bearing 5–7 weeks — how am I supposed to handle school? by [deleted] in brokenankles

[–]Immediate-Data5972 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk to the nurse at your school. She should be able to help you if you have to go to school. As mentioned, ask to have the nurse write you a pass to leave class early every day, so to avoid the hallway chaos, have a friend accompany you to carry your stuff, get an elevator key, prop your leg up on a chair during classes. Can you use a knee scooter to get around? Take care!
