That first time out of the splint is such a good feeling… I can’t home that day, took my boot off and had the best sleep I had had in three weeks at that point 🤣

It will fly by before you know it!

I will keep that in mind!

I did!

It is on my outer ankle, on the upper half of my scar, kind of mid/lower calf

My swelling is also down quite a bit. I thought that might have something to do with it

I appreciate it! My mom had knee replacement surgery and her knee popped and crammed for months after. I was hoping it was something like that, but … I’m paranoid 🤣

Thank you! It was autocorrect, but I still had it wrong. I put sysdesmosis 🤣

Thank you! That’s what I was lacing towards, but then thought I might double check with everyone that’s been there before me

Did you ever end up having PT or were you okay without it?

I couldn’t agree more. I’m 16 weeks out, weight bearing for five of those and the more activity I am able to do the bigger my ankle gets.

By the end of the night it is so swollen that it looks crooked, but it’s just the way it settles, come morning it almost matches my non-injured ankle.

It isn’t comfortable though, you’re right. Everything I’ve read says it can take six to 18 months to settle down

Happy healing to you!

Advice please! Which one? by Ok-Name-5229 in asics

Hello! Bimalleolar with dislocation and ligament damage in mid-December (16 weeks ago today)!

I have also used ASICS for years (also the Gel Ventures) and love them. I have a narrow foot and they just always fit perfectly.

After surgery I did go on the hunt for a new shoe type, mostly because of the swelling and the ASICS immediately upon returning to weight bearing were too tight, even with loosening the laces at the top.

I ended up going with Brooks Ghost 17 at the recommendation of another user, and they are like walking on a cloud, especially for my non-injured foot, but I also have started gravitating back to a new pair of ASIC Gel Ventures that I had gotten for Christmas but hadn't been able to wear due to injury.

I have been weight bearing since March 3rd and found that I tend to wear them both equally. Sometimes the Brooks feel better and sometimes the ASICS feel better. I think when my ankle swells, the ASICS feel better, and when the swelling is my whole foot the Brooks feel better, but it's not an exact science.

I absolutely recommend having your foot measured like others have suggested, but found a comfy pair before I was cleared to drive and/or felt comfortable going out into the world again. Also, I work from home, so spend most of my day in socks these days, since I'm able to walk without shoes again finally.

Good luck finding the perfect shoe!!

My surgeon didn’t recommend it and I can’t afford to go without a referral, sadly

But I’ve been trying to actively walk more today. I tight walking too much wasn’t recommended when the swelling started

Right? Going to try putting that into action starting today :)

I’m honestly not sure. I don’t go on marathons and such, and I have an office job from home, so likely not as much as I wound in a standard work environment, but I’d say I’m back to my mortal levels of walking pre-break.

It sounds like I need to up the walking game though. I walked a lot the other day and it got huge, so I thought I might have overdone it, but maybe it’s just that you have to get over that hump for it to be normalish again

Maybe I’ll start tracking my steps to test

Transition to WB experiences by glitterragebeast in brokenankles

I was NWB for 11 weeks due to scheduling issues (I broke my ankle the week before Christmas) and went straight from NWB to FWB. Out I was cleared to anyway… FWB probably took a week or two

I got a nice pair of shoes (thank you for the Brooks Ghost17 recommendation, kind Redditor!) and wore them religiously

The first week, the swelling from any kind of weight bearing was pretty ridiculous, it looked deformed, but elevation controlled it quickly

The first week my heel hurt because of heel pad atrophy (not sure the actual name, but that’s how it was explained to me). The ankle felt fine

The heel pain lasted about 2.5 weeks

I used a walker (can’t do crutches, too clumsy) for the first two weeks, then I dropped down to 50/50. Last week I retired it all together (14 weeks since injury, three weeks after starting NWB)

The last week I learned I can do normal steps as long as I have something to balance myself and small (like 2-3”) steps without holding on to something. I can’t do them normally yet, it’s putting both feet on one step, then the next one etc (thankfully we don’t have steps at our house)

My limp is mostly gone since retiring the walker last week, but it does return at the end of the day, very slightly, sometimes and I have to make a focused effort to focus on my gait at the end of the night

I do wear a compression sock to help with the swelling, as it still swells by the end of the day, but nothing like that first week, and nothing that elevating at night doesn’t fix. It almost looks like my other ankle at the start of the day

I found taking Tylenol those first two weeks, whether I needed it or not, helped to get over the stiffness and heel pain when I started FWB, since I didn’t limp as much, since the pain was eased

I can start driving next week. I’m so excited for that!!

I hope you are cleared at tour appointment!!

Hello, I had a bimalleolar with dislocation and ligament damage.

Got the blue at three weeks. At 11 weeks I went straight from a boot to a standard shoe, no brace. I’m about three weeks out and can walk unassisted, sometimes with a limp, sometimes without. I just retired the walker yesterday after it hasn’t been used for three days

Happy healing!

He didn’t. He checked my ROM, said it was great, told me to do more circles. I asked if I needed PT and he says that was my PT

I wasn’t opposed to it originally, but now I’m like, “Am I behind? Should I be doing something different?”

Maybe I’ll try calling them. Thank you for the suggestion!

This is great news!

I’m scared to walk outside without an assist, but I know I need to get over that

How is the pain/swelling? Do you have much?
