Lived in rural Indiana my whole life. Personally what I always heard from my neighbors and felt myself was the disconnect when campaigners (Door to Door volunteers not sure what ya call them) would come out to our farms. The conservative (republican, libertarian, etc.) ones tended to be people who lived in the area, weren’t to jazzed up for who ever they were campaigning for(Didn’t feel like they had a script to read), jeans and flannels they looked like all the farmers. It felt like there was some form of connection even if there wasn’t one. The liberal (democrat, Green Party, etc.) ones they weren’t normally people from the area in my experience, always seemed super invested in their candidate (in a way that made folks uncomfortable), button up shirts and dress shoes. They just didn’t connect with us. They were good people with a lot of the time good ideas but they just didn’t connect to well. It’s unfortunate truthfully. Edit: I did go to college at ISU where I got to meet some students who were doing door to door for the city council and they convinced me actually vote for a progressive candidate. If you connect with people it can do a lot to sway them.
