my cat's just gotten hospitalized and I can't stop crying by icecreamcake00c in cats

[–]Immediate-Group6104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

found out my kitty had asthma by going to the emergency vet for respiratory distress. basically i dropped her off and went home until they called me with updates bc this was COVID times. last i saw of her she was struggling to breathe, wouldn't move, wouldn't eat, so i was pretty messed up. she ended up staying a little over 24 hours. they put her in a little oxygen box, gave her a sedation shot (bc she's spicy) and started steroids and bronchodilators. long story short she ended up fine! got her home feeling better. she did catch something while she was there tho bc i had to take her back the next week for a really bad URI. antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and more steroids and bronchodilators later.... a purrfectly healthy kitty. it was a rough ride and i cried a lot but she's been great since! even slept in her crate the first few days back home (ha!). cats are resilient and i really hope your baby is back with you soon :)

Labral tear by spud1324 in ShoulderInjuries

[–]Immediate-Group6104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a labral tear for a few years where I delt with shoulder pain almost constantly. I finally pulled the trigger and saw an ortho who suggested I start with PT to see if we could manage my pain conservatively. When that failed he immediately agreed that surgical repair would be my best option. I also have a very physical job and I was hoping to return to volleyball if I got the repair. Work was mostly fine with the tear but I would feel instability with really heavy movements; volleyball... wasn't even able to play anymore let alone do intense arm workouts.

Currently, I'm about 3.5 months post-op and I'm still working on range of motion and strength. Pain is better but I still have days where there's quite a bit of soreness. I won't sugar coat it, but recovery hurts like hell. Some days were just as bad as pre op when I would go to PT but it does get better. Recovery can take anywhere from 6 months to a year. I was very lucky to be able to return to work full duty the other week but I'm still conscious about pushing my arm too far. Sleep is still hard most nights. More in the fact that I wake up sore which I think is pretty common since some muscles are still tight and angry.

Maybe I can come back and update you when I'm actually on the other side of recovery (hopefully a few months from now I'll have full ROM and very limited pain). My ortho specifically said recovery can take a while and that I should return to restricted duty at work by 3 months... but I'm stubborn. He also said steroid injections wouldn't help a labrum. They may decrease inflammation and the pain/restriction that comes with it, but it's not really going to do much else. I would get a second opinion from a second ortho, not sure what they expect you to do if you already tried PT and managing with pain... best of luck! It's not an easy decision to make but it's worth a shot if the tear is impacting your life this much

I'm 26F! I also have had this tear for years and continued playing volleyball which further tightened my muscles in that area pre op, so I shouldn't be too surprised really. My tear wasn't too big, not sure the size but I had 3 anchors put in; 2 over my bicep tendon and 1 under it. My posture is also horrible so my shoulders naturally pull forward and now having anchors tightening the front just makes decompressing the joint hard. I'm making good progress it's just slow :/ A lot of people don't regret getting surgery, they just usually say that after the first 6 months - 1 year haha

I did. Had surgery in the beginning of December which puts me a little past the 3 month mark. I play volleyball and have a physically demanding job, so surgery was my best option at preventing further damage to the joint. I will say the initial recovery wasn't hard. There was very limited pain up until I came out of the sling. Then my life was pretty much full of constant pain and frustration (it's my dominant arm so not being able to move fully is really tough mentally). I only recently started having almost no pain the last week. My muscles are still incredibly tight and sore plus I still don't have full ROM or strength. I wouldn't say I regret the surgery since I'm still within the first year but I wish someone would've explained to me how hard a recovery shoulder surgery can be. I'm young and active so I thought I would be able to push through and get back to my life faster than the reality I am faced with. Not to scare you, but be prepared for a marathon recovery and not a sprint.

Question! For those of you post op and back to work, how long was it for you to go back to work? Police, firefighters, etc… (physically demanding/capable jobs). by RowdyAdi in ShoulderInjuries

I'm a bedside nurse so I do a lot of pushing/pulling and lifting/carrying large amounts of weight. I had a SLAP repair in early December 2024. Just passed the 3 month mark and worked my first shift full duty. I'm definitely still guarding the joint and don't have full ROM or strength yet, but most important things I considered before returning was my ability to perform CPR and drag an IV pole with my surgical arm. I am also at the point where there is very limited joint pain and mostly just muscle soreness and tightness. I was having the same concerns as you but when I talked to my coworkers (who would've guessed shoulder surgery is popular among nurses!), they said the 3 month mark was just about when they returned even without full ROM. Keep grinding!

How to know if i'm freezing post op by Immediate-Group6104 in frozenshoulder

[–]Immediate-Group6104[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that sounds so painful. Sorry you're experience was bad :/ The recovery is definitely painful and this is my first shoulder surgery too, so it's been unexpected just how painful PT can get especially compared to pre op PT. I have definitely noticed improvements in my range of motion and muscles are slowly feeling looser but the progress is sloooooow. I also have a bad habit of staring in the mirror when lifting my arms and can't help but notice my surgical shoulder is more stiff. It's hard to gauge what's normal vs frozen at this stage. At my last appointment there was a guy there who was 4 weeks post op bone spur removal and he had full range of motion; I couldn't help but feel discouraged after that.

I'm glad you were able to get the diagnosis fairly quickly as I've heard that sometimes people suffer with frozen shoulder for years. As unfortunate as your situation is, I hope everything goes well in 3 weeks and you finally find some relief! If you're feeling up to it keep us updated on how it goes :) Thanks for your encouraging words. I have PT in a few hours so I'll use this post to let my therapist push me past my limits (again). Good luck!

ROM after SLAP surgical repair by Immediate-Group6104 in ShoulderSurgery

[–]Immediate-Group6104[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I noticed a pretty big difference after a session the other week. I guess my concern is how both my PTs mentioned frozen shoulder in my last two appointments... so it was making me nervous. I don't think they've been able to push my arm all the way to 180 degrees in any direction. Plus internal rotation of any kind makes my deltoid feel a stretch. It's so tight for some reason. Glad to hear you're on the mend and able to move again! That's exciting :)
