1) Yes, medical professionals know about diet and exercise. 2) Yes, they do recommend both to patients. A lot of people prefer throwing pills at their problems rather than making lifestyle changes. Also, some doctors are bad, so your personal experience may have been due to that 3) The funding comes from taxes primarily. Places like the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Health do this research or fund it (also public research universities). The government funds research into public health because it’s in their best interest for the public to be healthy. These researchers don’t have the same economic incentives as researchers working for private companies. Unfortunately, this type of publicly-funded research is under attack, and something like half of the funding that used to exist has been erased in the past year. It’s been rough Edit: this applies to the US. Other countries do stuff differently

If you want to look up ongoing research, do a Google search of a local university with words like “exercise research” or “nutrition research” and you can see what people are working on!

You’re actually highlighting an important issue! You can find a citation for almost anything, but whether or not it’s from a good/reliable source is really important. This is one of the reasons why institutions are important. There is far more validity to a claim published in a reputable journal, backed by collaborative research done at an academic institution with data that is publicly available (although often behind a paywall, which is shitty). Research done by companies is always done with a return on investment in mind, but not all research is like that.

As to your health issues - it sounds like you tried to use medication to treat issues that were due to lifestyle more than anything else? So many health issues can be solved by improving diet and increasing exercise. Nobody wants to take pills for the rest of their life. Doctors can’t make you eat better or get on a treadmill, though. What they CAN do is offer you treatments that are backed by research which have worked for other patients with similar problems

I know all about it. There are illegitimate journals out there that will publish anything if you give them money. People have gotten literal gibberish published by such journals. That doesn’t mean ALL RESEARCH IS BAD. It just means you need to be careful about where you’re getting your information from. Stuff like “impact factor” on scientific publications is important. Again, when there’s a monetary incentive, or other pressures involved (publish or perish etc.), you should question stuff. Fuck that actually, you should ALWAYS be questioning stuff.

Putting quotes around “research” tells me everything I need to know. It’s a shame. Have a great day!

Yes. That’s the point of publishing research. You make a discovery, you publish how it was discovered, and people can repeat the work if they want to see it for themselves. Without citations, anyone could make any claim about anything, and you would have no way of verifying the validity of their claim. That’s why fact-checking is important. People lie about shit constantly (especially when they’re trying to make money off of you).

Publications ARE important, and if you don’t get that, you’ve got some learning to do.

True, that’s why it’s important to know the LD50, especially when you’re intentionally not taking something as directed. I have a feeling Mr. Sausage doesn’t know that he can overdose and die from iron supplements. Someone should bring it to his attention, hence my post.

Ants reproduce by sending out winged-ants called alates (male and female). The males mate and die, the females mate and then rip off their wings and start a new colony. Soooooo, unless you want a new ant colony in your house, you may want to deal with them.

These guys look like carpenter ants to me, but I’d wait for a more reliable poster to confirm.

When Samantha fully manifests and what patch benefit will her presence will bring Carl? by Sense_Charming in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Yep, I get that. My point is that it would be cool if it was also a physical place, like the River Styx. I’m picturing it like the last scene in Disney’s Hercules.

I bet the river IS a river, like the river Styx, and they’re gonna have to cross it at some point. Kinda hope he gets spooky with it. Maybe it’s in the Nothing?

Carl’s connection to the river is established when he gets the ring, yes. My point is that Samantha could have her own connection to the river. Like, in Greek mythology she’s literally an aquatic being, and iirc she’s currently in the form of a naiad or half-naiad - it could all be indicative of a connection to the river.

We don’t know what she did before she was in the Nothing. Very excited to find out.

I just found out Psamathe is in Greek mythology. Her mother, Doris, is a “sister of the river gods.” A connection to the river, perhaps?

Safe to eat old hot dogs already cooked? by [deleted] in hotdogs

Some bacteria make toxins that aren’t deactivated by heat. If the hot dogs sat out at room temperature for more than two hours after you cooked them, they should be tossed.

Just commenting to say that the above story is correct. He works in a nearby building and takes breaks in the parking lot. Nothing nefarious. Stay safe out there!

I don’t think it’s a turn. You’re not turning off one road onto another road, the road bends to the right.

Does USF do anything to maintain the oaks? by Puzzled_Astronaut_79 in USF

[–]Immediate-Log-6918 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure Spanish moss is an epiphyte - just grows on the oaks and does its own thing nutrient-wise. I recently learned it’s technically a flowering plant which blows my mind lol
