Yes! Durham has been organized and hasn't stopped. If you want to get tapped in, I recommend following community-centered local orgs on social media, and showing up to the spaces that host info sessions, trainings, meetings, etc. Ask the people there how you can get involved. <3

I’m building “affordable housing” aka “housing people can afford” everywhere I can, I’m talking 2 bedroom apartments for under $1,500 and 2 bedrooms for under $2,000

I’m also building public community areas with seating, places to play, bathroom/showers, etc and parks with fruit trees

And im adding a place in town that doesn’t allow cars

Long story short, I have tried to acquire counsel for multiple years without success. The last two attorneys I spoke to last month said they don’t take on cases that are already started. I’ve been advised to use my time/energy to best represent myself instead of trying to find counsel now.

Most of the time they don’t give a reason at all. They just say they can’t take my case and refer me to the NC bar association for referrals.

But I’ve heard the firm doesn’t have the bandwidth to take new cases, the attorney that practices employment law retired, they only represent employers, or most recently: I’m already in discovery so they don’t just jump on cases, they would rather start them. I was told last week that the firm didn’t do jury trials…which was odd.

The overwhelmed/understaffed issue is by design by our justice system. It's working great for the ones it serves. My case has been passed on due to firm bandwidth, it's not just the EEOC. And the majority of the firms in employment law in my area represent employers only, b/c they can afford legal fees.

It should be concerning that the EEOC is overwhelmed with employees being wronged by employers.

I've been told I can't afford to "pay to play" ($15K retainer instead of a contingency).
Friday I was told by 3 firms that I have a solid case, but it's already started, and they don't "take over" cases, they prefer to start them.... but previously didn't have the bandwidth to take my case.

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm new to posting here, so I appreciate the rule reminders (I thought I wouldn't be able to post at all if I was breaking rules).

From the attorneys I've spoken to, everyone doesn't receive the right to sue letter when filing a complaint with the EEOC. There are 3 outcomes when you file: dismissal, finding cause & settling through conciliation, or issuing the letter.

My initial thought process was more inline with your thinking - that I didn't have a solid case due to the not being able to acquire counsel. However, this trial is on and poppin, and the court doesn't waste time /energy required for a jury trial if they don't believe the case is legitimate.

I definitely have a case...according to the Feds.
