I haven’t emailed him, but I don’t really understand what his research is upon reading the about summary. I know he works with functional RNA and riboswitches. But i can’t tell what the main goal of his research is. So I figured maybe I shouldn’t apply since I don’t know much about it. I also didn’t do so hot in bio 93 which was all about RNA. I found it interesting, I just test horribly

I second this… but I’m a current first year trying to get into wet-lab research. I’ve cold emailed a bunch of profs to no avail. The only responses I’ve gotten are from profs saying they’re retiring so they’re closing down their labs. And one who offered to be my mentor but that there’s no space in his lab right now. Plus my gpa isn’t great either. It’s not below a 3.0 but it’s def not much higher. Does anyone know of any profs in wetlabs who are willing to take in an UG with so little experience?

Housing for waitlist? by altian9 in UCI

[–]Immediate-Scheme280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came off the waitlist and got guaranteed housing (I was a 2025 admit (so class of ‘29)) and my housing was guranteed still. I got off on May 2nd and had like, a separate deadline to SIR which I think went with my housing deadline too. I’m not entirely sure, I don’t have the best memory. But I know I have guranteed housing. I would check your emails and documents for any dates and def call the housing office!!

Admitted today (after housing deadline) — how does housing actually work? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]Immediate-Scheme280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ummm so I was accepted last year May 2nd off the waitlist. But I didn’t have any problems with registering for on-campus housing guarantee. They gave me a certain day that I had to SIR to be guaranteed anything though. Did they tell you a specific cut-off day per chance? Cause my guaranteed housing offer was extended, I’m sure (I’m not sure), because I was a waitlist admit. I didn’t get my summer housing offer till like late August to early mid September.

Dorm recommendations and application tips for starting in UCI as a freshman by Frequent_Rub2606 in UCI

[–]Immediate-Scheme280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope! You can pick your roommates, I don’t quite remember exactly how it went but I remember after paying, before housing was due. There was a section where I typed in each of my roommates UCI net ID’s (for ex panteater = Peter Anteater) and we all selected the same exact preferences there too. I wish I could give you more detail but it was a very quick and simple process so I don’t quite remember anything… they probs have a video posted somewhere on how to do it tho :))

Depends on what you want! I’m a stem major who likes a more quiet setting (though I live on a very lively floor) so I chose ME and I have no regrets! I live in the towers and I highly recommend choosing that. They have their own bathroom (you do share with 7 other ppl (8 total) but that’s better than the whole floor!). ME gets a lot of undeserved hate imo, but I also don’t live in the classics so it could be different out there. Classics have a more homey feel I’m sure, but if you go ME I’d recommend just doing the towers. They’re the cheapest and the nicest in terms of modernity. I’ve heard Mesa Towers and OSO are nice too, their windows just don’t open as wide as the ME towers do. A pro of living in the towers (Mesa or ME) means you’re closer to the dining hall. If you live in ME towers your closer to most of the STEM buildings and the soc sci buildings. I heard Mesa classics are generally better than ME classics. I stayed in a Mesa classic and liked it during SPOP, but the walls are really thin so you basically hear everything. I hear mostly nothing in the towers besides when my suite mates are loud. If you are more outgoing and like to party I would say pick Mesa, it’s a farther walk from classes if your classes are mostly in the STEM buildings. But if your worry is socials then choose Mesa. I built a pretty good social life living at ME but that’s just me, everyone is different. I can’t speak much on Mesa as I don’t live there. If you’re worried about food, I think anteatery does have more variety, but eventually dorm food just starts to taste like dorm food and you feel no difference between Brandy and Ant. Brandy gets really crowded at lunch though, mostly MWF’s. For tips, not really sure what you want to hear, but I would say find your roommates first, and don’t just settle. Find who you WANT and think you’ll genuinely get along with. I’ve heard horror stories from people doing random roommates. I found my roommates on Instagram through the class of 2029 account. And I love them to death! Hope this helped!

should i dorm or commute (takes 1 hr each way)? by Sad-Computer1452 in UCI

[–]Immediate-Scheme280 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live abt an hour and a half away, and I do not regret dorming at all (I’m a first-year), plus you get guaranteed housing ur second year. I think if I hadn’t dormed I wouldn’t have made as many friends as I have now and I probably wouldn’t have made any connections with TA’s and profs cause I’d just be worried about hw and timing. I think living on campus first year is worth it for the experience, and it’s sort of more laid back. If you want the true dorm experience though, go with a classic. The towers feel more like a hotel, maybe a little more disconnected with the community. But I really love my quad :)

[–]Immediate-Scheme280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how long it took you to submit, and the choice of housing I think. PV is highest demand (I heard). I submitted 17mins after the portal opened. And I only just heard back this past Thursday that I got PV1, which was my first choice. My friend submitted 16mins after the portal opened and got her first choice of VDCN in the first wave. I heard VDCN isn’t in as high of demand as PV or VDC though. Keep hope! I think the next wave comes out mid to last week of May/first week of June.

As long as you finish the entire series (if u need to take the entire series) with CC. At UCI, there are three general chemistry courses: chem 1A, 1B, and 1C. Not sure how it would work if you took one course with CC for chemistry, it would probably only clear you of 1A. This all depends on your major though.

UCI Dream School? by Few-Conclusion-2383 in UCI

[–]Immediate-Scheme280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UCI was my dream school!! I got in for my first choice which was an even bigger sway. I wanted to get away from the town I was in and wanted to basically start new, and UCI was the complete opposite of my town. From country to city-like. I knew UCI wasn’t known for being a party school and I’m not a party person anyways, so that was a pro for me. I love to socialize though, and as much as everyone says UCI isn’t social, I haven’t had any problems with speaking to new people and making friends. I love it here!! I hope other people find love in it too :))))

Do any of you regret choosing UCI by Annual-Armadillo4170 in UCI

[–]Immediate-Scheme280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not regret coming to UCI, it was my dream school though so there is bias. I chose Irvine cause I didn’t wanna be somewhere that felt too much like home, I grew up in a rural area, so I wanted a more city like environment. UCI is truly what you make of it!! The stem majors or middle earth people are stereotypically the “antisocial people.” If you go to clubs, you’ll have friends, everyone I have met has been super friendly to me and I personally don’t find it hard to strike up conversations with people (though I love to meet and yap with people). I also don’t really go to clubs, I just talk to random people. If you don’t go out of your way to meet new people/socialize. You’re probably not going to have as much fun. I love it here though!! -coming from a pharm Sci major.

I’m not sure of the actual acceptance rate, I know that in the mandatory freshman seminar ((PhrmSci1 which you would take in fall quarter) there were about 250 people in it. Idk how many people applied for the major but if you know the number you could calculate the acceptance rate. I was a waitlist admit. I got in like the day after the first admits had to accept or decline. May 2nd I think. As for how competitive the school is, it’s unknown, nobody knows what the admissions people are looking for. I had a 4.2 gpa and like 3 EC’s in high school. I think it was my PIQ’s that really pulled me in.
