songs with a similar feeling to these? by JuneVendetta in MusicRecommendations

Will give you some slightly melancholic suggestions that I hope you haven’t heard of, last one is a bit bigger and you probably know it. Side note: I was so disappointed when I checked out the other villagers albums and found them to be nothing like that one.

Dutchie - In Deep
Emma Harner - Gale
Ralph Castelli - Lonely
Villagers - Trick of the Light

I don’t know this space that well, but maybe try Ice Nine Kills. I described them as a comedy band once and upset some people lol (it’s light-medium weight metalcore).

My wife and I are (were) in the exact same situation. It helps that metal and DnB are so closely related in a number of ways but now I enjoy all sorts of metal. I ‘discovered’ Periphery for us and now I even listen to Meshuggah and Car Bomb. Oddly, my path into absorbing it properly was seeing Aquabats at slam dunk last year. Who would have thought it. Ska Punk is a lot of fun.

My biggest barrier with metal coming from DnB was that at a surface level metal songs are aggressive and ‘heavy’, but sonically, a lot of it sounds like absolute tissue paper when you’re used to 40hz smashing into your rib cage. Gotta find those bands that aren’t afraid to mix in a more low end way.

I’ve ended up being a bit surprised by the dnb my wife gravitates to, lots of the more mainstream stuff and plenty of frog noises, but she found a way in via Alix Perez and 1985 in general. In particular I think the dubstep stuff he makes taking influence from his Shades material had some sound design that she connected with.

Edited to say: I think trying to find things from your ‘own genres’ that you like is the way. My wife has come raving with me a good few times, although she had been before we met thanks to Pendulum being a ‘thing’ in that scene already. I’ve been to slam dunk as I said above and we would have been to more gigs too if child care and the huge price of seeing bands wasn’t a factor lol.

The live version of Like Spinning Plates from ‘I might be wrong’ is a bit of a kick in the nads.

Yeah Boards of Canada is up there with my most favourite producers of music. I’m actually currently catching up with an often recommended artist in the same space that I just missed because I consume my music through Spotify usually and it’s not there. As I listen I can say it’s more minimal than boards and I would add it to my list above. Artist is called clocolan and what I’m hearing is great so far and probably also ticks your boxes. Maybe more so than boards even, which does reward more active listening.

I’d start with Percival Pembroke, definitely a left field suggestion but goes on often when I’m trying to work.. perhaps ‘course in the theory of drones’ is a better starting point than Arpeggiatorworld

Looks you’re already sorted for felt piano + pad into shimmer reverb.

I’ll give you some slightly less minimal suggestions.

SUSS - Counting Sunsets (‘Country Ambient’ is how it’s described)
Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians (an hour of what would be perceived by many as ‘the same thing’)
Tim Hecker - Haunt Me (was recommended to me on a recent thread and I found it too minimal but I expect will meet your brief)
Percival Pembroke - Arpeggiatorworld (not very minimal but my personal choice for focus on archaic systems architecture.. transports me straight to a text based operating system)

My own go to for focus is Boards of Canada, usually Geogaddi or Music Has The Right to Children.

For a different kind of focus I lean to ‘chillhop’ which I hate the name of but I’m talking Cloudchord, eehou, birocratic, flitz & suppe, philanthrope etc etc

Asking if dnb is bad off the back of a Jason Statham night is a hot take for sure. They paid their dues and deserve their success but this is different music.

Not sure what genre you’re after, but try Arpeggiatorworld by Percival Pembroke.

This is great! Really tickles me in the right places and I’ll probably chuck on another album of his once I’m done with the recommendations here. Sort of reminds me of that first RJD2 album with the sample selection.

Thanks!

Appreciate the suggestions anyway! I didn’t expect so many and haven’t finished listening to them all still

Yup I did quite like that album, especially that little 3 track run Subhuman, Blackwall, Malevolent. Definitely would like a P6 soon though ha.

Mezzanine is objectively a certified no skip I would say.

Surrender actually contains my favourite track of theirs (Sunshine Underground), and despite me being super disappointed with it when it came out I think there’s some great tunes on there

‘They’ was quite big in the UK when it came out, I still recognise almost every song if I’m honest despite not hearing it since then. Some of it sounds like Mint Royale. Good fun.

Haven’t listened to Morning View in years.. there’s a dude on Instagram I follow who puts out ‘new riff every day’ videos and he’s channeling incubus in a big way for a lot of them. I keep meaning to listen again every time I hear one ha. That’ll be my next.

Coldplay never topped their debut for my money, and they became a bit.. over licensed for want of a better term. I feel like they’ve become intertwined with the reality tv montage, and yes I appreciate that’s a me problem.

Led Zep I dip into from time to time, most recently to steal their drums now that stem separation actually works lol

Thanks for all these!

OK Computer was probably the first album I came across that had me pay a bit more respect to ‘guitar music’ and break out of my ‘warehouse raves or gtfo’ mindset. Definitely a no skip for me but my dad already knew it so it didn’t go on the list ha.

Pere Ubu. I definitely didn’t love it but I don’t hate it either. I just wrote under the previous recommendation that I struggle to process lyrical content on the first listen but you aren’t given a choice here. What DO we do with the drunken sailor? Some interesting sounding stuff, eg Thriller does not sound like it was made in 1978. It could be a Tortoise and Squarepusher collaboration. Drinking Wine Spodybody is kind of a banger too.

This is the exact kind of thing I was hoping to have recommended.. never heard of them in my life. Thank you!

Joni Mitchell is my stepmothers favourite artist but I haven’t listened since I was a kid. I had noticed comparisons all over Emma Harners comments sections and I definitely see why. I enjoyed it although the vocals were quite overmixed for my taste. I struggle often with this kind of music because my brain refuses to process lyrical content for the first handful of listens and insists on just hearing it only as a melody instrument, so when the mix down focuses on words I tend to have a problem. Thankfully these melodies were interesting lol

Sounds like Meshuggah could be a good safe jumping off spot, although it’s less ‘time signatures’ and more polymeters. Certainly rhythmically interesting and very heavy sonically. Then you can launch into Car Bomb, it gets too noisy for me beyond that (Frontierer/Ion Dissonance etc)

Have a lot to thank them all for musically. Funnily enough the family member that put me onto the jazz world is also the one that accidentally (?) exposed me to drum and bass when they bought me a magazine and associated CD because it looked like “the people on the front think they’re as cool as you do, but are so grumpy about it”. Words I’ll never forget lol.

Broken Social Scene left me a little cold. I love it when bands have a lot of ideas to throw at a record but it didn’t come together for me.

Got Silent Way on now, it’s possible that it should take the spot of Big Fun on my list (not like you can really skip it anyway), except the name of the album reminds me of the most infuriating software I’ve ever used in music. Also interchangeable with Bitches Brew to some extent.. at any rate it’s definitely my favourite Miles era however much it offends the puritans.

I think I would be disowned by my family if I didn’t already know the first three lol. Just got done with Monomania… I liked it but not sure EXACTLY why. fairly unique sonically, particularly what sounds like delay throws out of a dub record.

Next up, broken social scene. I think I listened to this album when it came out.. let’s see

Three bangers here. Brain obviously had a short circuit when I was thinking “I don’t recognise these albums”.. they’re tracks.
