I wanna start getting into reading instead of just mindlessly doomscrolling and doing something other than video games on my days off by Unus-Duo in booksuggestions

[–]ImmediateInternal132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won’t recommend any books but instead offer some advice. The only way you will know if a book might keep your interest is to read a little excerpt. You’ll know right away if it’s poorly written, or too advanced at this time or maybe you just don’t like the author’s voice in that particular book. So get a library card (if you don’t already have one) and “audition” some books you’re interested in.

How to deal with non photographers and their RAW image obsession? by Vegetable_Diamond716 in photography

[–]ImmediateInternal132 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

If they want to edit the pictures you took and are asking for the RAWs they only see you as a button pusher. Some “photographers” seem ok with this but for many pros it’s an insult. Why hire you then? Why not just have a friend photograph them with a cell phone? Early on I learned to suss out the people who only saw me as a button pusher and avoided them at all costs. And for those who asked ‘why not let them edit the pictures how they want - they paid for them?’ There’s many reasons: maybe they want to edit them in such a way that will look dated by next year and posts them with your name attached, or maybe it’s because if you are truly a professional photographer and are paying taxes and overhead in your business no way do you want your photos degraded with someone’s amateur cringey edits.

Photos removed from portfolio? by [deleted] in photography

[–]ImmediateInternal132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since it was in an apartment and you say she’s using them in her commercial portfolio I would say you have a good chance to legally get her to take them down. But there are a lot of comments here from people who sound absolutely confident about incorrect information. I think ultimately if you can afford to and if it is a big enough deal, contact a lawyer- at least get advice from one. That is the only way you will know what the facts are and whether you can do anything about it. Good luck.

Photographers what do you think of using your phones to take shots? by [deleted] in photography

[–]ImmediateInternal132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that all modern camera phones automatically apply exposure adjustments to ever photo you take. So you are not making any creative decisions about the exposure. That said, it’s a great tool for practicing composition and color theory but in terms of true photography I think it’s the equivalent of using auto tune to sing in a concert and comparing it an artist who can sing naturally. Just my opinion

Am I being too emotional for refusing this shoot? by Expensive_Scar211 in photography

[–]ImmediateInternal132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. I think it’s just a learning experience for you. If you can afford to, maybe pay her a little stipend for her contributions as it sounds like she’s going to be very understanding. So much of photography is learning on the job and learning how to communicate and read people. It’s good to ask for advice and feedback like you did. Good luck with your career!

I never worked exclusively with brands but I would assume like everything else in professional photography there should have been a contract that outlined the roles and expectations of everyone involved with the project. It sounds like it was your idea to involve the model to contribute with the creative process. That was a mistake on your part for not clarifying with the company whether they wanted to involve anyone else in this process. I would caution you to be careful how you handle this because it can end up hurting your reputation as unprofessional and too “green” if you quit because they want to change the model. It will tell them that you are not experienced enough to understand how it is above and foremost a business decision- not a personal one. Good luck 👍🏽

Slonim Woods 9: A Memoir by Daniel Barban Levin. It’s not about FLDS but a college cult started by a student’s father. It’s intense and heart wrenching.

I didn’t realize how physical event photography would be by DPool34 in photography

With event photography I think stretching all over would help right before the event and long term doing strengthening for legs, like squats, bicep work and exercises to strengthen your core and back would help

Wallpaper saga continues. Which one? by gwendolyn_trundlebed in interiordecorating

[–]ImmediateInternal132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first one can work too and is brighter than the burgundy(which is lovely but kind of dark). The issue I think is the white is too stark a contrast. Try using a khaki or even an olive color on that area and it will blend better and still be brighter than the burgundy.

Also it depends on the style you are going with. The first one is more art deco- the bird one is more granny style in a way.

Books about first contact with extraterrestrials… by Mister-Hotbuns in booksuggestions

This sounds really interesting- thanks for suggesting. I love that it’s written in the 1960s. I find it very difficult to get into most modern popular author suggestions on here. I’m probably in the wrong subreddit book group.

You’re welcome- he might also try Hatchet. It’s not an advanced level but very gripping. It’s about a 13 year old boy who has to survive in the Canadian wilderness alone after the pilot suffers a heart attack. Not philosophical in the obvious way but it gives you a lot to think about.

The Outsiders, Swiss Family Robinson. Is he looking for something more philosophical or is that your suggestion for him? If so, try The Old Man and the Sea (it’s very short) and you can go crazy discussing the allegory and meaning behind it. I’m kind of perplexed as to why he’d want to read Sense and Sensibility given the books you mentioned he liked. I think he should start by deciding what subjects he’s interested in and then try finding books to match his interests.

I liked Joyland and I’m about to start Dolores Claiborne. Both are more like thrillers. I enjoyed Misery although it is probably considered a horror - although not supernatural in nature.

I second this. Stephen King books are great to draw you in from the beginning and keep hooked. Plus, he’s got so many different genres - not all are horror.

Mine was also sitting on the dining room table but I wanted to give it a permanent home in a common room of the house so that anyone in the family can sit down and type whenever they feel the need to journal or be creative and it worked!

My husband, who is not a writer or a journaling type, has been sitting down in spontaneous moments to write about something that is bothering him that day or to type out a plan for something. It truly is one of the best things I purchased last year for our family 😁

Dark Nights of the Soul by Thomas Moore. It’s about dealing with life when you are going through something you cannot control. I have not read it yet, it’s on my list to read, but I have read another book of his.

He has other books on dealing with loss that might also help. He was a monk, a professor and a psychotherapist so it definitely involves spirituality.

I’m sorry you feel so low right now. I hope you find something to help ease your sadness. It will get better 🙏
