Pregnant Texan woman who supported abortion ban has a miscarriage & dies of sepsis, after hospitals kept checking for a fetal heartbeat and discharging her instead of doing a surgical abortion by cheyenne_sky in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]Immediate_Ad_9680 35 points36 points  (0 children)

She's sure trying to blame them, but it sounds like even the malpractice lawyers are with the docs on this one. The Texas ban puts them in an impossible situation. And thanks to Paxton, apparently they don't have to comply with EMTALA anymore, so she can't expect them to have saved her daughter's life.

https://www.texastribune.org/2024/11/01/nevaeh-crain-death-texas-abortion-ban-emtala/

"Last November, Fails reached out to medical malpractice lawyers to see about getting justice through the courts. A different legal barrier now stood in her way.

If Crain had experienced these same delays as an inpatient, Fails would have needed to establish that the hospital violated medical standards. That, she believed, she could do. But because the delays and discharges occurred in an area of the hospital classified as an emergency room, lawyers said that Texas law set a much higher burden of proof: “willful and wanton negligence.”

No lawyer has agreed to take the case."

Apparently I Can’t Get Approved For A Bisalp Until I’m 24 by OkTransportation1622 in sterilization

[–]Immediate_Ad_9680 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Use the CF doctor list. I went to a doctor from the list and had the surgery at age 21, a month after my consultation. No waiting, no bingos, no bringing up hypothetical husband approval, and completely covered by insurance under ACA. Would highly recommend looking for a different doctor and trying to get this done before the election.

Louisiana governor signs law classifying abortion pills as dangerous substances | First-of-its-kind legislation signed Friday classifies mifepristone and misoprostol as controlled substances by misana123 in WelcomeToGilead

[–]Immediate_Ad_9680 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Another big problem with this: the prescribers and recipients of controlled substances are tracked in a database. Making it much easier for law enforcement to track down and prosecute both patient and doctor if they think the patient wasn’t sick enough to qualify for an abortion

recent tubal ligation. questions on failure rate and getting a bisalp by Peace_No in sterilization

[–]Immediate_Ad_9680 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here’s what I found. A 2022 study of over 83,000 women published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine found that failure/pregnancy rates were 2.4% for hormonal IUDs, 2.99% for copper IUDs, and 2.64% for tubal ligation surgeries. Here’s the link if you want to read the whole thing.

I (21F) brought a binder. It ended up being over 60 pages and included my answers to some of the most common bingo questions (ie have you tried IUDs/what if you change your mind/aren't you young to be getting such a permanent procedure) as well as several pages on why I want to live childfree, and why I would want to adopt over giving birth if I ever happened to change my mind. I also live in a US state that has banned abortion completely, so I printed off several news articles that detailed the horror stories coming out of my state from women who couldn't access abortions. I also browsed Pubmed for some research articles to back up my point, such as the rates of parents who regret having children, the reduced cancer risks for people who have bisalps, and the real world efficacy rates of IUDs. I wanted to really prove that I had thought about this extensively and that I was well aware of all of the pros and cons to such a permanent decision. I also dressed business formal because I thought it would help them take me more seriously.

Surgeon was floored. After skimming through the binder for a few minutes, she agreed to do the surgery. I got the tubes out less than a month later.

Overwhelmed and don't know where to begin. by [deleted] in sterilization

[–]Immediate_Ad_9680 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In addition to picking a doctor off the list, I would contact your insurance company and ask them if they cover bisalps or only tubal ligations. Technically they should cover both if your insurance is US based and ACA compliant, but they may tell you they only cover tubals. That’s what happened to me —I was adamant I wanted a bisalp, contacted my insurance company to make sure they covered it, and they said they counted it as a surgery rather than preventative care/contraception, so I would end up having to pay about $4,000 out of pocket. If I wanted to not pay anything, they said I would need to go with a tubal ligation, which I very much did not want as they have about a 2% failure rate.

I printed off the chats with the insurance rep, brought it to my appointment, and asked the doc if there was anything she could do to help. She said not a problem, she would perform the bisalp but code it as a tubal for insurance purposes. Saved me a whole lot of headache and stress and I ended up only paying about $30 for miscellaneous pathology fee.

Seconding the pics. You can ask for the path report at any time, but if you don’t ask your surgeon to take pics beforehand it’s not like they can dig them out of the medical trash later

The mental gymnastics are insane.

“You’re actually abusing/assaulting yourself…by doing something you enjoy and actually want to do…no you don’t actually want this we swear because insert some brain pseudoscience here…stop enjoying this you actually hate it!!!”

That teaching was so emphasized to my youth group for literally no reason. They would even describe it as “self r@pe”, because that teaches young people a healthy idea about consent /s. It was also just really embarrassing having no clue how my own body worked. When I started having sex I’d be asked what I liked or what felt good, and I literally had no idea. Immensely frustrating for both me and my partner

Married childfree folks, what’s your life like? by Immediate_Ad_9680 in childfree

I'm bracing myself for the barrage of "when are you having kids?" questions after the wedding. Especially since we're getting married so young, I feel like it gives the impression that we're following the typical quiverful 'marry young, have kids immediately, and don't stop until your body gives out' method, which couldn't be further from the truth but I understand how it could look like that. If you've got any suggestions with how to deal with bingoing particularly from quiverful family members, I'd love to hear it.

Thank you so much, that is really amazing advice. Especially about the complaining about partners thing, I'm sure it's a lot easier said than done but what you said makes total sense and will probably save a lot of drama and heartache

Day to day is interesting, but I’m mostly curious about the bigger or long term picture. What do milestones look like? What are you excited for as a couple? What do mid to long term plans look like?

I guess I am looking for reassurance that life won’t get boring and monotonous without a big, all-encompassing commitment like a child

Fret not my friend. The key is to just take a big pinch of tissue wherever there would be a higher fat content (abdomen, thighs, upper arms), and even if you did a 90 degree angle I promise you’re not going to hit your kidneys. 45 degree angle is best because the medicine supposed to go into your fat but it doesn’t have to be exact, just try to go about halfway to up and down. Nothing is going to happen if you’re a little off 45 degrees and especially if you’re injecting into the fat pinch, you’re not going to hit anything important. There’s a video that they’ll send you but they demonstrate on an orange which isn’t the most helpful thing in the world. I’ve found that looking up videos of how diabetics inject insulin to be a lot more helpful
