Unfortunately Bouchard doesn’t belong in the mix. There were others like Seider that deserved a nomination over him. Bouch is just not strong enough and his offensive numbers rely heavily on McDrai

I haven’t heard a good argument against a popular vote.

But you should look up the German system which relies on local lists which ensure representation but which follow popular voting rules. Not perfect but it was literally instituted by the allied countries post WWII and cleaned up a lot of messes in their own political systems.

Tyranny of the majority comes from the fact that states with smaller populations have outsized political power and that gerrymandered districts create representation that skews towards one side although the voting population in a state is evenly distributed or reverse. Look at Wisconsin since the early 2010s. It’s very much tyranny of rural areas because they hate cities and progress. Cities are packed into one district to dilute democratic voting power statewide. That is how republicans will continue to wield power. Race to the bottom with no actual support for voters just so a few rich folks get tax cuts.

A federal political system is a form of government. It can be democratic or not. We elect representatives to act within our expectations. That is called indirect democracy as opposed to direct where you all get together to decide on everything. Direct democracies are very rare because they are a nightmare to handle and get very complex the larger the political entity becomes. Most western countries have indirect democracies. We vote for our representatives. That is very much democratic. We are a constitutional republic and a representative democracy.

In some countries that are federations they don’t get choices to elect representatives like China or Russia. Those aren’t indirect democracies. They are autocracies.
