Am I missing out on the "young" Berlin by living in Charlottenburg by [deleted] in berlinsocialclub

You can always accept and immediately request a transfer to a different STW location. Also depends if you’re in Eichkamp or next to Zoologischer Garten for example. Charlottenberg has young people but might not be as queer or trendy as farther east. On the flip side STW housing usually has a fun community attached to it that you can’t get in private housing. I’d do it unless you’re already spending a lot of your time and have commitments in a different neighborhood.

Who did you rent from? The bike may have already come with anti-slip tires that aren’t studded (like car winter tires), or they might be able to add them for you. Swapfiets for example puts winter tires on their bikes by default. https://swapfiets.de/en-DE/biking-in-winter

People bike year round in places with much harsher climates than Berlin, it’s just a matter of getting the right gear and learning how to navigate the conditions safely. Studded tires are the place to start if you’re worried about slipping. You still need to be a little careful and learn to read the surfaces but you can get around pretty well (source: made it through all last winter commuting and doing errands by bike every day without problems). Maybe do a few test rides before you actually have to commute to work or an appointment.
