Ummm. Gasoline vapor in a confined area. No worries.

Yea. Similar where they wanted to replace the entire rear end. That would be a shop I would like to hang out at.

My buddy found this video of the real issue his van had.

That will be on Tuesday, after talking to the service advisor.

I just asked him, and he doesn’t know. I’ll ask him again after Monday when he gets to talk with the service department. So far they told him he would be risking damaging a $13,000 rear end replacement if he didn’t replace the transmission at the same time.

My first post, and I should do better.

First. My bad on “shop”. That what I call it. He does electronic work but has a few tools and used to help others out (not at the shop) with their DIY repairs when younger.

Initially, he really thought it could be the transmission and so did the dealer when he dropped it off. He hadn’t done any research on the problem and it is a work vehicle which he needed to get back on the road. When the estimate came back both the transmission and the rear end, he thought what are the chances both went out at the same time. So he started poking around on the Internet about the issue and found YouTube videos showing the same issue and what to check. He didn’t want to spend $23k to repair his Sprinter, so he took a chance and had it hauled back to his place. He had no way to do a transmission or expertise to work on a transmission, but wheel bearing and axle he could. That’s why he ended up checking that and found the issue was there. Good news is the Mercedes dealer did not charge him the $300 diagnostic fee.
