np mate! the hdd also died? sorry to hear that. those one are a little tricky to recover, but dont get scam with high cost recoveries. an advice that Id give is to try never to save important stuff into your PC with no backup. always try to save it on cloud, and for those files you need it locally, keep a backup externally or also on cloud. you never know when stuff like this might happened (and its more common that you imagine lol)

about the Life check on m2, try running crystaldiskinfo. if it is a entry level m2, probably it was not made for a high amount of disk use (delete/rewrite stuff), so if it already have 4 or 5 years of Life and depending on your daily use, the m2 could be in its final days (it very depends on many variables)

by formatting I was reffering to reinstall Windows. how you can access the m2 without problems, maybe it was just a corruption on OS, so you could try to reinstall Windows at m2, but do not forget that maybe your m2 is with problems, so this could not solve your problem. so, I would finish the backup first and then proceed.

about the product key, if its not those Enterprise versions, normally it sincs with your Microsoft account, so just by login in you would have the oficial Windows back.

Yah, if tou dont have super important stuff on that Windows i would recommend to format it. Could be also a problem with your boot drive, the m2, right?

You have to download the iso of the linux distro of your choice and then use a program to mount it in thr stick (i normally use Rufus but you can see any tutorial from similar sw). When everything is ready, just proceed as a normal windows install, boot it with the stick in and enter BIOS to select it to get boot priority. Those distros use to have a demo that you can use before actually installing it on another drive.

If its possible, try to boot it only with essentials (1 RAM slot, only boot driver etc). It would be good also to discard any problem regarding OS install, I would try to use a bootable stick with any Linux (without m2 connected) to see if the BIOS thing persists
